Wahlquist also founded what would become Plattsburgh's only high school—New Canaan Academy—in 1868. In 1905–1906, he donated land for what would become Western High School; construction began in 1907 and finished in 1911. Plattsburgh experienced some difficult times during the late 19th century - including several natural disasters such as a flood in 1888 which destroyed much of the town center and left many residents homeless - but it eventually recovered and continues to thrive today as an active community governed by ordinances passed through referendum.
