Plattsburgh is a small town in upstate New York, located on the south side of the Mohawk River. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of Warren County. The first European to explore and settle in what is now Plattsburgh was Nicholas Biddle in 1724. He named it after his friend and patron, James Platt, 1st Viscount Plattsburg. In 1802, Colonel John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Ferry Company which ferried passengers across the Mohawk River from Albany to Plattsburgh. In 1827, John Davenport arrived from Vermont with his family and homesteaded on the present site of Plattsburgh. He became one of New York's most prominent farmers and entrepreneurs. One of his sons, George Davenport Jr., established a sawmill here that continue to operate today as Welland Mills (owned by Empire Sawmills). The town was incorporated on April 14, 1829, by act of the state legislature following the merger of two other towns – Vestal and Saratoga – within Warren County. At its incorporation,Plattsburgh had a population of only 5 people; however it rapidly grew due to its location near Lake Ontario and its natural resources such as lumbering and fishing opportunities nearby. Industry began arriving in Plattsburgh during this time with loggers coming from Maine to cut down trees for fuelwood or building materials; fishermen Roe Bros.; fur traders Hennepin & Co.; Wessels Repeating Arms; Kluge glass manufacturer Fenton Brothers; piano maker Hope Brothers; dairymaster Crouse & Sons; shoe manufacturers Osborn & Payne& Foote & Co.; cooperatives: United States Woolen Mill No 2 (founded by Augustus Phelps Dodge); American Cotton Ginnery (founded by Ebenezer Howard); Clinton Glass Works (founded by AlexanderClinton). By 1860 there were 25 businesses operating in plattersburg-township combined! Corduroy manufacturing continued until World War II when all looms were replaced with machines thanks to wartime munitions shortages caused by Germany's bombing campaign against England/UK! A post office operated continuously until 1959 when residents installed their own postal system using an early modem style switchboard! Today there are several antique stores located throughout town which offer unique items not found anywhere else in the world!

The first Europeans to visit what is now Plattsburgh were French fur traders in 1624. The Dutch set up a trading post here in 1638 and named it Nieuw Amsterdam after their new city in Holland. In 1765, the British established Fort Niagara here as part of the war with France. The town's name originated from an early land grant by George Washington to John Glover on July 12, 1764. During the American Revolution, much of the area around Plattsburgh was occupied by British forces under General William Howe (1721–1799). On October 19, 1777, however, General John Burgoyne surrendered control of Canada to Continental forces under General George Washington at Saratoga Battlefield near present-day Albany. The town was finally incorporated as a village on February 14th 1825 and became a town on November 3rd 1836 when it merged with Beacon Falls and Oswego townships to form the current Town of Plattsburgh

The town became a strategic military post on the northern frontier of the United States and played an important role in the American Revolution.
