During World War II (1941-1945), Plattsburgh played an important role in the war effort as an aeronautical and munitions production center for Allied forces; its largest employer was United Aircraft and Mechanical Corporation (UAMC). The plant produced B-29 Superfortresses for United StatesAAF strategic bombing raids over Japan; other products include tanks and artillery pieces. After World War II ended, UAMC closed its plant in 1948 and all remaining jobs were eliminated within two years by Ralph Nader's Fair Labor Standards Act protests against industrially biased labor practices by major US employers such as UAMC. Today there are no high school or college students living in town; most residents commute to Syracuse or New Rochelle for work or study purposes. However, some businesses have reopened which include local farmers markets as well as several small shops and restaurants that cater specifically to locals/locals only - providing access to unique flavors not found elsewhere!
