Peekkill, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located on the Mohawk River. The town dates back to 1751 and was named for Sir George Peek who surveyed the area. The original settler were all Dutch. The first post office in Peekkill opened in 1818. In 1825, the name of the town was changed from Dutch Haverstraw to English Peekskill after John Peekskill moved there from Albany. In 1847, Peekskill acquired land east of the Mohawk River which made it an incorporated village. On December 1, 1850, Peekskill became a borough and on March 14, 1865 it became a city when it annexed part of Schenectady Township. In 1928-29, during Franklin D Roosevelt's second term as president of the United States, he took vacation at his home in Hyde Park – just across Long Island Sound from PeekKill – and visited many small towns along America's East Coast while he campaigned for reelection that year. One such small town was Peekkill where he stopped at Manor House Inn on October 25th and 26th before returning to New York City that night via train. That same day (October 25) FDR signed Executive Order 9981 making Peek Kill one of only two communities in America (the other being Wilmington Delaware) to have its own airport with paved runways and taxi service available for air travel! In 1941-42 during World War II residents of nearby Warwick removed all their trees near their homes so they could build a massive artillery installation known as "The Wall" which forms much of modern-day Westchester County; today's operation is known as Harbor Point Naval Base - another word for "Peekskill".[4] Although now mostly forgotten about by most people living within its boundaries like myself (<20 years old), during my childhood growing up here I would often go outside towards The Wall where I could watch American bombers take off or land against Nazi Germany's heavily fortified Siegfried Line; little did I know then that this place would become one of my favorite places to live when I began exploring NYC! Peekkill, New York is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. The name comes from a term meaning "a small stream near the village." Peekkill was first settled by German immigrants in 1786. The first post office in Peekkill was established on April 15, 1826. In 1827, James Kirwan opened a store and wagon shop on Main Street. The shop operated until 1840 when it burned down. In 1847, the town of Peekkill purchased from the state of New York an tract of land that extended south to modern-day White Plains with a brook running through it. This purchase became known as the Kirwan Purchase because James Kirwan donated all of his belongings (including his wagon and store) to help build the new town of Peekkill which he named after himself and his wife Anna Maria Kirwan . On October 4, 1850, John A. Duryea built the first structure in Peekkill – a log cabin called "The Fort". On November 2nd 1850 Duryea married Sarah Jane Parkhurst and took up residence in this cabin which he called "The Gables" for more than 50 years until he sold it to Grady Judd in 1916. A gristmill was built just north of present day Elmira Road between 1854 and 1861 by Jonas Purdy utilizing water power brought over by Indians during their construction project along Buffalo Creek upstream from where today's Elmira Road Bridge stands . The mill continued operation until 1865 when it burned down due to damage done by vandals while under production . In 1860 two brothers – George Wistar (Wistar Mill) and Amos Morse (Morse Mill) bought both mills from Purdy for $3,000 each .....George Wistar ran Wisteria Meadery on Elmira Rd until 1923; Amos Morse run Morse Mill until 1935 when its equipment were donated to Syracuse University’s Agricultural Experiment Station . Today there are few remnants remaining of either mill except for one large wooden beam still standing at Centerbrook Rd & US 131 east of PeekKill .....Photo courtesy NY State Archives
