Peekskill, New York is a small town in upstate New York that was once known as the "village of the Mohicans." The community was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1724 and was renamed Peekskill after riverfront propertyowner Nicholas Peekskill. The village rapidly became an agricultural center due to its location at the junction of two major rivers. By 1800, Peekskill had a population of around 350 people and was primarily a working-class town. However, during the late 19th century, Peekskill experienced a rapid growth as it became one of the leading centers for manufacturing in Upstate New York. In 1892, Samuel Morse opened his first electric factory in Peekskill and this led to increased industry and commerce in the town. In1910, there were over 100 businesses operating in Peekskills commercial district. By 1920, however, industrial production had ceased and most residents had either left or moved to other villages within upstate New York or abroad. Today, Peekskill is home to a small number of historic buildings such as the former American Telephone Company Building and both banks which remain significant landmarks today.
