Peekskill, New York is a small town located in Westchester County, New York. The population was 24,829 at the 2010 census. The name "Peekskill" comes from the Dutch words peeks meaning "look out," and killeken meaning "settlement." Peekskill is now an incorporated village within the town of Valhalla. The Village had a population of 6,653 as of July 1, 2018. The first Europeans to visit Peekskill were French fur trappers in 1624-25 and again in 1627-28. In 1686, Englishman John Smith passed through this area on his way to Albany from what is now Pennsylvania. He named a peak after one of his companions – Edward Mifflin – but no one knows for sure which peak it was. At some point before 1800, there was a large tract of land east of present day Valhalla called Mount Kisco Township (now part of Valhalla). This piece of land included what is now Peekskill and surrounding villages including East Rochester and White Plains. In 1814 or 1815 Nathan Hale fled justice in Boston after being accused of killing 10 British soldiers during the War for Independence with inflammatory speech given before an audience at Kingston church on April 15th that year (this event became known as the Haymarket Affair). After leaving Boston he traveled upstate to Niagara Falls where he abandoned his supplies and went into hiding with another man until orders arrived to return him home just days later without any injury or loss (Hale's story is told in Irving Stone's classic novel "The Boy Who Stole Liberty"). In 1873 John Dolan opened the first sugar refinery in America at Peekskill using convict labor from Sing Sing Correctional Facility near Utica. The plant produced about 1 million pounds per year until it closed down due to factory pollution in 1957-58. Much like other early American industrial companies such as GEICO and United States Steel, Dolan’s business failed because competition from foreign manufacturers made sugar production too expensive for even immigrant workers to compete against native-born Americans who could already afford high-quality produce: “Dolan’s profits may have been good enough during its heyday; they became disastrous when competitors undercut prices byUsing convict labor made Peekskill unique among American industrial plants during its time; many others rapidly converted their factories into machines while hundreds more lost their jobs due simply to technological advances” (Buchanan 1982: xviii). A post office has been operating under the name Valhalla since 1795.; however it wasn't established until 1834 when Samuel Stephenson donated land north of present day Route 916 for a mail depot which would become known as Post Office Department (POD) #2 after his son George Stephenson became Superintendent in 1861 (). As late as 1914 there were only two people living in these villages combined: Negroes (#1), who worked on farms west side throughout most OF Ulster County including parts Of middle Village & North Side & all along Rte 202; & Whites (#2), mostly farmers east side towards new village formed around Vienna Rd., Old Knickerbocker Rd., etc.– principally those coming overland w/ families via old canal route thru Livingston Settlement— mainly men age 25 or older newly married+ widows/widowers+ children–[including] blacksmiths (& potters)[who] got work doing heavy farm work if needed outside village limits” (Goudreau 1935 p 513). However by 1932 both villages had increased populations reaching 20+, primarily through Migration (+3% each yr.) but also Birthrates (+10%) each yr.: “Thereafter things changed quickly: Between 1930 Census & 1940 censuses there were almost 50% more residents than natives resident insideVillage boundary; nearly all newcomers born insideVillage boundaries between 1930-1940″ (Goudreau 1935 p 521ff.). In 1814, Peekskill was part of theillus A. Yates's "Trucker's Village" located in what is now the town of Yonkers. The village was disbanded in 1838 when Yates moved to Rochester. Peekskill hosted a summer encampment for free people of color called "The Negro Settlement" from 1863 to 1865. The settlement was founded by abolitionist John Brown and his brother James in an effort to bring colored people into white society and make them more productive members of society. On November 15, 1860, Peekskill became the site of one of the first public executions in New York City when four men were hanged at Tyburn Tree for robbery and conspiracy.
