And so it went – until white people invaded further down the river in 1814 and renamed everything again! Of all the places I've visited over my career as an archaeologist- including ancient Egyptian tombs at Dahshur and Stonehenge- this place ranks up there as one of my favorites because of its sheer antiquity!" -Dr. James Echols

In 1757, Peekskill was chartered as an independent settlement by British colonists. Over time, Peekskill became increasingly prosperous thanks to its status as an agricultural center and its access to resources such as water power and minerals. By the early 1800s, Peekskill had become one of the most important communities in upstate New York. In 1814, it lost its charter but continued to operate as an independent town until it merged with Albany in 1825.
