Peekskill is a town in upstate New York, located on the banks of the Hudson River. The population was 27,582 as of the 2010 census. It is part of Westchester County. The first Europeans to visit Peekskill were French voyageurs in 1624-25 and Jesuit missionaries in 1627-28. In 1764, General James Wolfe besieged Fort Ticonderoga at Peekskill and captured its commander, Sir Henry Clinton, after a long siege. The village was founded by Nicholas de Montresor on May 10, 1764 as "Montresor's Settlement." In 1807, John Cushing became the first white settler when he arrived from Albany with his family. He built a log cabin and named it "Cushing's Cabin". In 1815–16Captain Amos Kendall explored what would become Peekskill Creek while surveyors surveyed land for an upcoming road connecting Syracuse to Utica; they found no water available so developed their own well there instead and assigned Kendall to look for a site for their road. When they returned four years later they reported finding water but no building had been erected on it because there were only two men in town who knew how to drill wells: Colonel George Croghan and Dr Samuel Davenport Jr., both Quakers who lived nearby at Adirondack Park. In 1821 Major Isaac Austin moved into the town from Saratoga Springs; he began construction of Austin’s Mill which became one of the most conspicuous features of Peekskill during its early years—the mill dam formed an impressive structure overlooking Main Street today (then Broadway). The mill closed down in 1903 but has been restored as a museum since then.
