In 1814, General James Forbes built Fort George on an elevation overlooking what is today Old Mill Road between Northampton Street and North Avenue in present-day Peekskill. He garrisoned this fort until 1817 when he abandoned it due to lack of supplies and troops. The remains of Fort George are still visible today near the intersection of Market Street and First Avenue in downtown Peekskill. Dutch farmers started growing wheat in 1795; they called it "'t Hart van de Rijn'" (the Hart of the River). A mill was built soon afterward by Johannes de Vries (1750-1829), one of the founders of DeWitt Clinton Company that became Andrew Carnegie's business partner during his early years as a paperhanger on Wall Street. De WitteClinton Mills quickly became one of Gotham's largest producers of flour and other goods exported to Europe. By 1800, over 10% of all flour produced in New York State was from DeWitteClinton Mills alone! A school was established at what is now Main Street corner Hudson Avenue in 1809 by Revs., Nicholas Lowrey (1800-1892) and Timothy Jennings (1800-1898), both Congregationalists from Utica Falls church near Binghamton; it served as an academy for local children until 1830 when it became a seminary affiliated with Columbia University under Reverend Daniel Webster tutelage before becoming fully university sponsored in 1865 In 1825 Pieter Bakelius opened ovens at what is now Hudson Place for bakeware manufacture; this enterprise led to Bakelius & Co., which became Nabisco Foods Corporation . From 1840 until 1862 Frederick Engels ran Engels' Bakery located on Canarsie Ave SE adjacent to today's apartment buildings where he sold bread by hand . Papermaking increased significantly during this time with Scotsman Alexander Calder producing high quality paper products including billiard balls using natural fiber thread from oakum logs he found while working on boats off Long Island Sound . Many factories were developed throughout these years including those at 12 East 4th St NW (now part Of Macy's Department Store); 515 3rd Ave NW (now Kresge’s); 511 Park Ave NE; 321 Third Ave NW; 930 Eighth Ave NE These mills employed thousands people while also contributing significantly to village growth: many homes were built hereabouts during this time period such as Mayflower House/Village Hall dating back to about 1800 When electrification arrived throughout America starting around 1886 systems went out almost everywhere especially along major transportation arteries making work available only intermittently or not at all sometimes leading mobs into violence typically calling themselves "Electricians" often arming themselves with clubs or pistols
