In 1840 he submitted his proposal for statehood to the New Yorker convention and won; however much work still needed to be done before this new country could actually exist as a nation. When American independence was declared in 1776 many men left their homes behind in order to fight for America against whatever forces were supporting Great Britain. Many men from Peekskill decided to stay and form their own small community along with other Loyalists who also chose not to leave their families behind This group eventually became known as the "Peekskills". From these beginnings until after World War II they sustained modest growth despite continuous attacks by developers looking for cheap land on which they could build subdivisions or malls.

The community of Peekskill grew rapidly during the early to mid 1800s as a result of its location on the border of two large farming towns: White Plains to the east and Nyack to the west. On January 1, 1820, Peekskill became an incorporated village under the name "Peekskill". In 1829, John Slingerland purchased land within what is now Peekskill Township from Nicholas Lewisohn for $1 million. He started construction on what would become one of America's most famous Gothic Revival architecture firms – Slingerland & Company – which still flourishes today with offices located in parts of Manhattan and Queens. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln visited Peekskill for about 15 minutes when he stopped off on his way to Saratoga Springs before traveling on to Albany. When Lincoln arrived in Saratoga Springs he asked local farmers how they were doing and then went into their homes for dinner before returning to Saratoga Springs that evening via Stagecoach Park (now Interstate 5). The day after his visit another farmer traveled from White Plains to Farmingdale approximately 150 miles away just in time for dinner at Mr. Lincoln's house before continuing home for breakfast next morning. After dinner that night MrSlingerland walked over from Saratoga Springs followed by stagecoach passengers who had brought food with them along Route 9 between White Plains and Nyackville Junction where they stopped for lunch at(); this stop marks today's intersection of I-5 and State Highway 190
