Peekskill, New York is a town in the Hudson Valley of New York State. The population was 9,641 at the 2010 census and it is the sixth most populous town in New York County. The name "Peckleshoot" meaning "a small stream" was given to the community by early settlers because of its isolation from other settlements. Peekskill is located on the border of Westchester County and Sullivan County and has a total area of . It lies about north-northwest of Albany, northeast of Schenectady, east of White Plains, south-southwest of Tarrytown, west of Yonkers, and northwest of Rockland. According to the United States Census Bureau, Peekskill has a total area all land (621 acres), water (1 acre), and 2 housing developments (1 apartment complex). The Town's boundaries were set down in 1784 when it was part of Menands Patent for Clinton Township which became Clinton County in 1802. As per the USGS Geographic Names Information System database: the first mention that Peckleshoot Creek had any name or resemblance to those now used there comes from August 25th 1692 when Nicholas van Nostrand wrote concerning his journey up that creek having passed through this place he called 'Pechkishetten' on his way to Newtowne'. That creek then ran through what is now known as North Saratoga Avenue and South Saratoga Avenue before terminating at exit 224 Kane Road. This road led directly into what is now East Aurora Boulevard where Peter Schuyler built his manor house according to plans drawn up by Nicholas de Peyster some years earlier while residing at Newtowne Manor also known as Hackensack Manor also situated on that same site. In 1784 Peter Schuyler bought 1/2 mile wide strip along present day East Aurora Boulevard from John Chambers who owned allof South Saratoga Avenue besides still current access road approaching North Saratoga Ave from point blank range including original Dutchmans Hooker’s Tavern just south side today's entrance off Richards Blvd between First Street & Second Street reached by following old Chinese MTR line right past Hwy 20 & left past Richards Blvd where Wagon Wheel Inn stood until 1971 when development terminated it becoming Richards Blvd & I-287 interchange

Peekskill, New York is a town in the Hudson Valley of New York State. At the time of the census in 2000, its population was 14,393. The name comes from the Dutch words "peek" and "kleen," meaning valley or creek. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Peekskill were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624. They named their land Peek Killnage ( Valley of Kleen). The first permanent settler was Nicholas de Jordaan, who bought land near present-day Uniondale on December 15, 1673. He also donated one acre (0.40 hectare) to the trustees of Westchester County for public use as a courthouse square. As early as 1714 there were several small towns and villages along the Hudson River located around Peekskill Creek where fur traders could store goods during winter months before continuing their journey upriver to Albany or other points northward. One example of this type of village is Putnamstown between Croton Falls and Ballston Lake which had 7 households and 2 churches by 1805 when it merged with nearby Town of North callan to form Peekskill Township on May 30th that same year In 1785 an act was passed by the General Assembly establishing Niagara University at Buffalo as well as founding two schools within each township: one for boys only and one for girls only. In 1827 both institutions were combined into ONE institution under the name “Niagara University” with a new campus at Pennington Hills in central Peekskill ileading to what are now Amherst and Hyde Park ileadng towards Harrisonburg ilesanding today’s Springfield across Delaware Avenue . With these expansions came corresponding increases in population density making it difficult for people to find space on private lots throughout townsquare until 1871 when restrictions were placed upon developers by Supervisor Elisha Holmes after complaints from citizens about too much development taking place without proper sewerage systems or streetlights
