In 1945 Peekkill's arsenal manufacturing plant closed but secondary industry has continued with some success such as plastics manufacture now located in Syracuse NY In recent years there has been significant redevelopment including new housing developments near downtown which have attracted many high income residents In addition to its economic importance for surrounding municipalities Peekskill is known for its musical heritage dating back to when country music singer Hank Williams performed at Madison Square Garden on October 10th 1946 There have been numerous tribute concerts throughout the years honoring this event including Hank Williams Playbill Museum exhibition which opened in 2007

Peekskill is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 15,545 at the 2010 census.[1] Peekskill is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The town was first settled by German and Dutch settlers in 1724. In 1814, Peekskill became part of Albany County and remained so until 1959 when it became part of Westchester County. The village of Peekskill was founded in 1829 by Nicholas DeWitt and continued to be an unincorporated community until it merged into the Town of Peekskill on January 1, 1955. On December 5, 1967, the Town of Peekskill merged with the Village of East Meadow to form the City of Yonkers. The history of this small town can be traced back to more than two centuries ago when Germans and Dutch settlers first arrived here. At that time, these people were farmers who grew corn and other crops on their properties near what is now Route 9A north of present-day Peekskill Junction. The name “Peek” means "a peak" in both English and German while “kettle” means "to cook." So early residents called their new home "Kellerhof," meaning "landing place for hogs." Today's ZIP code 84536 has its own significant landmarks - such as Kellerhof Cemetery (containing graves from pioneer days) - which are located just outside the limits of today's village proper. In 1724, John Noble erected a sawmill on Mill Creek west side Of what is now North Main Street in present-day Peekstown Township; this mill remain active up until 1840s when it gave way to a gristmill operated by Ezekiel Fuller & Sons built about 1800 on land adjoiningpresent day Woodstock Road east side Of present day Prospect Park south side Of main road).[2] It should also be noted that during this time there were several other villages located around or near Peekstown - including Butterscotchtown (now Sayreville), South Kingsbury (now Hillsboro), North White Plains (now Vernon Hills), Parkersburg (now Lancaster), Giffordstown (later Glickstadt), Lynxdale (later Hyde Park) - all situated within easy walking distance or drive from where modern-day Peekskill now stands[3]. This location made possible much trade between these villages as well as many social events which took place along the water supply route known today as Killian Avenue including religious services being held at South Kingsbury Chapel which still stands today inside Prospect Park,[4][5][6][7] According to local historian Mrs Katharine Kappeler,[8]: There was no lack o' sport here either! A number ol' tournaments took place right up against those pesky trees down at Mill creek...or even across Mill creek itself... Hockey games being fought out between teams coming from all over Mohawk Valley.. Cricket matches taking place at various points nearby...fishing trips taken downriver... Opera performed regularly at various places around town like Holy Cross Churchyard off Killian Ave..... Numerous pageants taking place throughout Missouri Valley annually too......... All sorts ol' get-togethers gone on hereabouts! And most importantly folks could always count on one hand how many times they had to leave their homes for anything else than church or shopping!!! Just think about all those meals cooked over an open fire...... Folks would go door to door yapping about 'the potluck dinner we had last night!' etc....... That kind ol' life! Unfortunately some things did change however after World War 2 started – post office closed down hereabouts due largely to lack o' funds following war efforts elsewhere[9]. Today's boundaries formed shortly thereafter when then newly created apartments were built adjacent to North Main Street within current boundaries; prior parcels still included portions lying east/west OF Main St., extending southeast TO Springbrook Ave., southwest TO Ridgewood Rd., northwest TO East Meadow Rd., and northwest TO Kellogg Blvd./Route 9A
Peekskill, New York is a town in the Catskills region of upstate New York. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census. Peekskill is located on the border of Westchester County and Albany County and about 15 miles (24 km) south-southwest of Manhattan. The area now known as Peekskill was first settled by German settlers in 1765. The village of Peekskill was founded in 1777 by Johann Gottlieb Erhard Bauer, a fur trader who had married one of the daughters of George Washington. In 1814, Adam Weishaupt founded what would become our modern-day school system here. A post office called "Peekskill" was established in 1815, and remained in service until 1860. In 1821, John Shaw donated land to form what would become the Village Green Cemetery; this area now includes much of present-day Peekskill Village. In 1825, Augustus Saint Moritz built his summer home here on land that he had purchased from David Levy for $5 million dollars. In 1850, James Waddell founded a sawmill at what is now called Waddell Dam; this mill became one of the largest employers in Peekskill during its early years. In 1861, Andrew Carnegie bought 1/4 acre (0.20 hectares)of property at what is now Newtown Avenue and Main Street for $2 an acre (0.08 hectares). He began building a dam across Niagara River to provide power for his new steel mill there; this dam became known as Carnegies Mill Dam after him and his wife Jane Pittman Carnegie acquired additional property upstream with it in 1922.) Peekskill's growth continued during World War II as many residents came to work at nearby factories such as Kaiser Aluminum Company or Ford Motor Company . After the war ended however, many local businesses went out OF BUSINESS because they could not compete with postwar prices set by corporations like General Motors or IBM . Although some businesses did continue to operate through the 1950s and 1960s - notably Checkershirts - most significant development took place during those years when people started moving away from their homes and into larger apartments close to where they worked or lived
