Peekskill, New York (population: 20,000) is a town in Westchester County, New York. It is the seat of Peekskill Township and lies within the Town of Peekskill. The name "Peek" comes from an Indian word meaning "to watch." The first European to visit what is now Peekskill was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it Villa Peek-a-boo. In 1614, Jameson built Fort Amsterdam on the site of present day Crossville Road and called it Fort Orange. Dutch traders passed through this area during their travels between Albany and Rotterdam, so there was some Dutch influence throughout history in this part of New York State. The first residents of what is now Peekskill were German settlers who arrived in 1811 as part of the Second Allegany migration. They were followed by Scottish settlers in 1825 and Irish immigrants in 1832. By 1860, more than 60% of the population was English speaking with a small number (about 10%) also Italian and Polish immigrants. In 1865, Abram Beams bought 350 acres (160 hectares) near present day Crossville Road for $1 million from Daniel Freeman and developed it into Beams Park which today contains over 40 buildings including Beams Hall which served as the meeting house for both local churches and village meetings for many years before being replaced by the current building in 1957. This initial land purchase led to much development because other businessmen saw potential for lumbering around Beams Park but little else due to its remote location on an agricultural area with few transportation options available at that time. Today's businesses include several restaurants, two breweries (one located right outside town limits), three medical centers – one hospitalized since 1959 – two dental clinics (the last one closed down in 2013), four schools – three high school students only attend morning classes while one middle school student participates fulltime– all providing services without having any physical infrastructure within town limits; a library system serving over 6500 borrowers; active firefighting; a broadband internet service provider; five parks scattered throughout town with playgrounds, basketball courts/hockey arenas, tennis courts/gyms etc.; an event center complex housing up to 150 people including concerts, banquets etc.; plus numerous contributing property parcels totaling more than 1125 acres (.75 km²). Peekskill, New York is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,913 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Saratoga County and the second most populous community in New York City after Manhattan. Peekskill's first settler was Nicholas Sargent who arrived on July 6, 1777. Peekskill was originally called "Hiawatha" by the Iroquois. In 1805 it became part of Albany County and then Rockland County before becoming part of Saratoga County in 1827. The town was founded at an ancient Native American hunting ground known as Akechi-hippogei or "the place where the bear lives". The first European to enter Peekskill was Nicholas Sargent who landed there on July 6, 1777 from Kingston, Jamaica with his family and other settlers including John Woolridge and Robert Livingston Sr.. At this time it consisted of only a few hamlets/villages scattered around what is now downtown Peekskills Central Park which still retains its original name (Hiawatha). In 1825 Peekskill changed hands several times before finally being bought by Elias Howe for $5,000 from his father-in-law Jonas Hecker. The land had been purchased from Sir George Clinton for $50 each lot in 1685 by Captain Jameson and his brother Solomon de la Motte who established what is now Albany Mills just across the Hudson River from Peekskill Manor. Captain Jameson's heirs sold their holdings to Colonel Solomon de la Motte but they too sold out in 1800 to satisfy British demands for an implementation of General Order No 2 which required all patents held by Dutch subjects within three months of its issuance be surrendered or destroyed. Peter Hesse became one of these men when he acquired a patent for 300 acres (120 ha) at Horsehoe Pond near modern day Seymour Avenue and Mohawk Road opposite where he later built his farmstead known as East Putnam Place today’s Townsquare Shopping Center – also known locally as “ Hofstra Place” because Russian immigrants were once regulars at that location during early 20th century farming operations thereabouts). In 1840 Daniel Webster married Sarah Kinghorn here; she would become one of history’s most accomplished women politicians – serving two terms as Ulysses S Grant’s Vice President under Grover Cleveland – though her husband never represented her constituents in Congress nor did she ever travel outside New York State while he served Burrtags term representing NYS therein (nor did she ever run for office herself again following that service) until long after he himself had long since passed away….. Thus began one very public political dynasty: Daniel Webster Vs Sarah Kinghorn….. When Sarah died childless following a stroke suffered while visiting America during World War I aged 94 years old en route back home to England via Canada aboard SS Empire Builder on October 15th 1919Rachel Elizabeth Webbs took up residence herein permanently From then on Rachel ElizabethWebbs effectively ruled America & represented us nationally thru out those 3 decades post WWI even tho G renowned stateswoman such as F A Shultz (& others too) preceded her…. In 1795, Peekskill was first settled by Dutch colonists. By 1825, it had become a part of the United States. In 1876, Peekskill became an incorporated town. In 1917, Peekskill was hit by a devastating fire that destroyed many homes and businesses. The town rebuilt quickly and in 1921 annexed the neighbouring village of Westchester.
