Patchogue was first settled in 1664 by the Dutch. The town originally consisted of only a few houses and was known as "Pochtucket." The first settler, Johannes de Vries, built a small cabin on the shore of Lake George. In 1793, the town was renamed to Patchogue after Rear Admiral John Patch (1751-1813). The early years of Patchogue were difficult due to lack of farming resources. However, with the arrival of the railroad in 1854, things began to improve. A store and post office were built in 1855 and soon enough, patches of farmland became available for cultivation. By 1870,Patchogue had become an important community with a population of around 100 people. A school was also established that year. During World War II, Patchogue played an important role in supporting American forces. It housed large numbers of troops and civilians until May 1945 when it came under Japanese occupation. After the war, many residents moved away from Patchogue while others decided to maintain some semblance of their former community. In 1957, a fire destroyed most of the buildings in town but fortunately no one was injured during the blaze. Today,Patchogue is still garrisoned by U.S Marines and retains its importance as a military base as well as its links to Dutch culture and history
The town of Patchogue was founded in 1638 by John Montresor. It became a part of New York State in 1785. The population grew rapidly during the 19th century, and by 1871 it had reached over 10,000 people. In 1898, Patchogue was incorporated as a village.
