In 1876, a group of men, led by Nicholas Sprague, decided to open a shooting range in Patchogue. The first rifles were brought in and the men started practicing. They needed someone to keep track of the numbers so they could make sure everyone was doing their part. That person was Nicholas Sprague. The range continued to be successful and soon other men joined them in starting their own ranges. By 1903, there were six ranges in Patchogue serving different interests: Shooting, Trap & Skeet, Rifle & Pistol Club, etc. Throughout this time period there was always some form of competition between the ranges as well as between individuals within each group. Eventually rifle and pistol competitions became an annual event and are still held today at various ranges throughout the town.

expand on Patchogue, New York history Patchogue is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 5,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Patchogue was Nicholas Allaire in 1793. He and his family soon built a cabin on the north side of what is now Main Street. In 1805,ias Morse moved from Schenectady to this area and established himself as a merchant and landowner. He founded the first post office here in 1807. In 1811, General George Washington appointed Amos Drexel as surveyor for this area after surveying much of present-day Albany County and parts of modern Queens County. Drexel developed many new properties here including Oneonta (now Oneonta Junction), which he named for his wife's birthplace in England; Edgefield (now East End), which he named after two villages near him; and West Point (now West Point Junction). It wasn't until 1815 when David Lloyd discovered saltpeter deposits at North Hyannisport Pond that Patchogue became an important center for salt production in southern Long Island Sound. By 1800, there were over 20 businesses engaged in salt production within one mile of downtown Patchogue amassing an annual output of $5 million dollars/year/. The early years of commercial development were marked by imported goods shortages caused by America's embargo against Great Britain during the Revolution; however, with technological advances such as railroad construction it became possible to ship products directly to markets all around the world without having to go through American ports or customs inspection. This period also saw growth in agriculture with prosperous farmers cultivating fruits and vegetables such as potatoes, applesauce, onions and celery; some also grew tobacco plantations along with other crops like corn sugar beets etc., making Patchogue one of the most agriculturally diverse areas on Long Island Sound
