The original buildings in Patchogue were built between 1672 and 1785 for fur traders and their families who operated out of what is now called North Main Street. These early settlers (mainly English) founded a small village on Long Island that became known as Patchogue because of its proximity to Bombay or Calcutta on India's mainland. In 1814, when the Illinois and Michigan Canal was completed through southern New York State, developers eager to capitalize on the new transportation artery began to build residential subdivisions in what is now Patchogue Township. By 1870, there were more than 100 houses in Patchogue with an average size of 1½ stories and prices ranging from $1 per acre to $5 per acre. At this time, much of the land near present-day Brooklyn Bridge had not been worked yet and contained valuable marshland and swamp lands which would make ideal sites for farming or manufacturing purposes. During World War II many people from Patchogue enlisted in military service; some even served as POWs at Japanese camps on Long Island during World War II. Some residents also helped build up rural areas around Farmingdale while others developed businesses downtown such as printing shops, dry goods stores and real estate firms.
