Patchogue is considered to be an agricultural community and has a strong tradition of agriculture. The name "Patchogue" comes from the Native American word "pachute". The first European settlers in what is now Patchogue came overland from Connecticut in 1624. They were led by Captain John Smith and his men. In 1629, the English established a trading post at present-day Patchogue Harbor on Long Island Sound. The first permanent settler in what is now Patchogue was Nicholas Gilbert who arrived in 1639 with his family and built a house on the western side of today's Main Street. Gilbert became one of the earliest investors in land development on Long Island Sound. He opened a store and tavern called the Post House on Hempstead Road near modern day High School which still stands today. By 1775, Gilbert had developed much of present-day Patchogue into what it is today including many small farms which continue to this day as part of the towns core infrastructure In 1814, George Washington visited what is nowPatchogue and remarked that he thought it would make an excellent site for a military base because it was isolated from other settlements on Long Island Sound and could be easily defended if necessary . In 1825 President James Ketchum recommended that Congress appropriate $10,000 for land purchases within 2 miles (3 km) of present day Patchogue to build Fort Ticonderoga . However , only 1/4 acre (0.20 hectares) ever been acquired . Plans for Fort Ticonderoga were abandoned after disagreements about its location; instead , construction began on nearby artillery batteries known as Canandaigua Hill Battery The area around modern day Patchiege became known as Farmingdale after General Israel Putnam's forces captured it during their Invasion of Canada early 1800s

The name "Patchogue" comes from the word "patch" meaning an area of land where crops or flowers are grown. The original courthouse building burned down in 1902 but was replaced with a new one that still stands today. In 1906, Patchogue had its first football game and won 10-7 against nearby Hempstead). In 1916, Patchogue played its only water polo match against Farmingdale before disbanding due to lack of players; however, it has staged unofficial games since then including hosting the America's Cup which took place off shore in 2009. On July 4th 1913 an agricultural fair was held at the old Post Office complex and featured local produce such as apples, potatoes and eggs along with international exhibitors from Canada and Europe In 2007, Patchogue lost its bid for city status due to being too small to sustain a city government; however it has been lobbying for city status ever since. In 2013 the Town Board voted 6-1 to make patches into villages with voting privileges like other municipalities in Nassau County
In 1664, the town of Patchogue was founded on a small island in the Hudson River. The first settler was Nicholas Sacco, who came from Venice, Italy. In 1852, Patchogue became part of New York City and was renamed "New Hyde Park."
