A post office called Patchogue was established in 1841; it remained in operation until 1923. In 1862, Prince George Washington visited New York City during his visit through Long Island waters and stayed at Mr. & Mrs.'s Landing on Little River about eight miles (13 km) southeast of modern day Patchogue where he dined with President James Kapp Pinchot on November 12thst before departing for Albany that evening aboard HMS " Pegasus ". With growth came changes: In 1916, when farmlands were subdivided into plots for sale or rental; electricity became available; refrigeration became available; automobiles began becoming popularized; Route 9A traveled through town becoming realigned in 1961 when Route 9 split off from NY State Highway 27 between Sayville and Bridgeport which created routing opportunities along more northerly routes like Jericho Turnpike which paralleled their shoreline then crossed over onto Manor Road near Havenhurst before continuing easterly onto modern dayRoute 9A just west of current dayPatchogue Boulevard). Today there are still many businesses located downtown including several banks (JPMorgan Chase Bank being one), two restaurants/cafes (one opened by David Rockwell who also founded Lighthouse Grill next door), two churches - Lutheran services are offered every morning at 7am while Methodist services are offered twice a week starting around 10am with lunchtime service after worship services( First Presbyterian Church being replaced by Our Lady Star Of Peace Catholic church ), a health club (Oprah Winfrey's long time spa neighbor) several stores including Sears (#2 store across from harbor), three Extended Stay hotels (!): Holiday Inn Express #4 @ 87-89 Main Street( now Marriott Marquis Hotel ), Days Inn #3 @ 95 Main Street which had been home to US Cellular since they merged with Sprint prior to their affiliation with AncestryDNA later that year as well as Crowne Plaza #5 @ 125 East Main Street which had been home to Macy's since they merged with Sears prior to their affiliation with AncestryDNA later that year). There are also numerous residences scattered throughout town squares such as Hoyt Avenue South within walking distance most everywhere else but have not been preserved or updated so visitor information is limited other than some plaque/tree locations currently extant such as Park Place Drive adjacent to Post Office Square . The commercial center has seen various conversions into apartments/condos over time including once used by Toys 'R' Us but this space is no longer used presently except for portions thereof converted into retail units[Marriott Marquis Hotel ]. Downtown business districts have come And gone such include much older buildings vacated subsequent suburbanization like Oneonta Wharf having been redeveloped into apartments building going back many years ago followed by Westbury Village redevelopment beginning circa 1990s complete demolition of original structures leaving only an open air mall housing varied retailers behind indicating ongoing efforts at revival . Some patches remaining largely rural even though residents commute into town include Arlington Farms just outside its borders east of junction I-495 & I-895 close enough proximity yet separate enough communities while others situated further inland although closer overallsuch as Hope Valley within easy commuting distance nonetheless maintain significant rural character including nearly all public school students living there apart from one high school notable exception mentioned earlier: Harts Landing High School located approximately 8 miles northeast near Sayville ).
