Patchogue is located on the eastern shore of Long Island and is bordered by the towns of Huntington and Oyster Bay to the north, Freshwater Harbor to the east, Babylon to the south and Sayville to the west. The first Europeans that discovered and explored what is now Patchogue were Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and Giovanni da Nieuwenhuizen in 1527. In 1614 John Smith sailed into what is now Patchogue Harbour from Sayville Point on Long Island; he named it after his home town of Ratisbona in Lombardy, Italy. In 1764 George Washington passed through here while campaigning against British forces during his historic crossing of Long Island Bridge. The first tavern in Patchogue open was The Tavern at Oyster Bay on December 3rd 1764 with a population of 10 people. It operated for four years before being closed due to bad economy conditions caused by America's Revolutionary War until reopened by George Washington himself as "George Washington's Tavern" on September 11th 1774 with a population of 50 people (the original building still stands). It became an inn famous for its dinner shows which took place weekly at 6pm until 1815 when it burned down due to an accidental fire set by one of its guests who thought it would be funny! A new Post Office was built at Patchogue about 1812-1813 with a population of 20 people; it served as a general store and post office until 1850 when it closed because there was no longer any need for mail service between New York City and Patchogue because trains had replaced horses & wagons as transportation methods across Long Island! After closuremail service resumed between NYC&PATCHOGUE beginning on April 12th 1850 via WEST MASSACHUSETTS SPRINGS COLLIER AND SOUTHWESTERN NEW YORK RAILROAD! By 1870 there were only 10 residents living in Patchaguey compared to over 200 today thanks largely to railroad development! The first electrified train arrived here on November 5th 1892 from NYC along CROSSING OF THE RIVER NEW YORK RR & PATCHAGUE TO LONG ISLAND EAST COAST LINE . By 1912 there were several businesses including grocery stores, laundry facilities, banks etc.; but unfortunately all too soon came economic recession which led to many closures throughout the 1920s!! However some notable firms such as P&O Steam Navigation Company bought much property around 1903 becoming part of Rumson before unified under PATCHAGUE STEAM LINES COMPANY LTD., INC.. Today many factories/facilities have been built here such as: GEMCO plc., TYCO CEMENTS INC., MICHELIN CORPORATION...still making life easier for everyone who callspatchogue their home!.
In 1664, the English settlers on Long Island began to arrive. The first structure built in what is now Patchogue was a log cabin called the "Fenway" on Fenway Park Road. In 1711, John Smith established a farmstead on this site and named it "Patriots' Farm." The first store in what is now Patchogue opened in 1837. By 1830, there were six stores in the town. In 1848, the town had a population of 508 people and a school. In 1865, Patchogue became an incorporated village with a population of 1,000 people. On September 12, 1866, Patchogue voters elected George Fenton as its first Mayor. That same year saw the opening of the New York Central Railroad at present-day Oneonta Junction.
