Patchogue is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 5,847 at the 2010 census. Patchogue is part of the Rochester–New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlement in the area was made by John Barker and others on Long Island in 1614. It was known as "Patticoake" or "Patchenogue". The name originated from a Native American word meaning "place where good corn is grown." In 1785, patches of land were sold off to induce development, which led to the name being changed to Patchogue. In 1815, General James Wilkinson's army disembarked at what is now Patchogue and marched upriver to join General Philip Schuyler's forces invading New England. On September 15th of that year, he found a small Indian village situated on the east side of present-day Putnam Creek betweenpresent-day Rockland and Southold townships. He burned it and took all its inhabitants into his custody. On October 26th of that year, General Wilkinson ordered Captain Samuel Chasebridge to take possession of Fort George on tidal Long Island opposite Mystic River for use as an arsenal during the war with Britain. As soon as he arrived there he discovered that there were no civilian or military inhabitants living there so he began construction of another fort which would become known as Fort George Clinton after then-President James Ketchum Clinton donated land for it in 1824. He also founded the town of Patchogue on this same island in 1825 with tracts given him by local landowners who had been induced thereto by his efforts to improve their lot financially through building projects around town (what is now downtown Patchogue). Governor Andrew Johnson signed a bill creating Suffolk County November 3rd 1865;patchogue partook fully within seven years thereafter! In 1870s two newoung men opened a grocery store next door to each other called Jug & Krook until 1935 when they closed down due to economic hardship! At one time post office operated out front until 1958 when it moved inside another building! After serving many years as both primary school and middle school for students across various villages within our county boundaries including Upton (now Naugatuck), Bridgeport(now Sayville), Watertown(now Stamford) ect., finally closing its doors due to lack of patronage in 1987; currently still standing vacant!/ formerly home Of Stonington Jr./ Sr High School
