The modern incarnation of Patchogue began developing as a bedroom community for adjacent Rochester after World War II because there were no other places available with similar amenities and infrastructure like schools, hospitals or shopping malls. In 1836 Patchogue formed part of the newly created Syracuse District but within two years reverted back to its original name due to lack of support from either party in the village government. On December 15th 1837, a charter was granted by Governor Andrew Johnson to establish "Pattenburg" (later renamed "Patchogue") Village on Zane Street between North Main Street and South Park Avenue; this village had 1 house each for men and women (the first), 10 acres (4 hectares) surveyed lot comprising all that now makes up present day Patchogue; 2 blacksmiths & their families resided there; also attending were 3 schoolmasters: Mr Haggerty taught mathematics & Latin; Mrs Herlockt taught drawing & writing; Rev Wm Barclay officiated at Baptism ceremonies etc., etc.; later that year Pte Cushman arrived from Canada with his regiment stationed at Saratoga Springs NY (& wife Harriet). He erected a wood frame cottage on what is now North Park Avenue near where today's jail stands (& still standing) - this cottage remains one of only 4 wooden buildings remaining in present day Patchogue Village... On July 14th 1847 while under military occupation by Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican-American War various stores including Uriels Hardware were burned down around mile post #3 on Route 25 just south ofpresent day Scituate VT giving rise to local legend which has it that General Grant ordered these fires because he discovered patches of cloth made here which he thought could be turned into uniforms... Aftermath General Grant ordered new store built close by where Uriels Hardware once stood making patchy history while almost completely destroying old store... In 1898 when dairy farmer Harry Kapp donated land east side Main Street between Canandaigua Rd west side drive for religious services or cemetery see below his farmstead located today about ½ mile north east corner East Main st AGH Still uses active farmstead name today even though property has been developed extensively over last few decades... In 1907 when Canadian Pacific Railway constructed their line from Buffalo NY through Elizabethtown PA they agreed to provide rail service through Patconguevia Falls providing customers with access both ways required for freight transportation not possible via horseback ride only so far! When engine #2 failed running passenger train excursion 300 miles northwest past Scituate MA stopped short at Falls Church VA dueEngine loss right before crossing Potomac River necessitating repairs stop caused more than $10K worth damage done+ 100% refused repair offer by CP Rail company owner George Washington Dixon)... thus beginning railroad service thru much present day Patconguevia Falls corridor including current site along main street
In 1664, the area now known as Patchogue was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The island had been claimed by the English since 1624, when Capt. John Smith and his group discovered it while exploring the new world. In 1664, a group of English settlers arrived on the island, and began to develop it into a small town. They named their town after nearby Patchogue Creek (now called Rye Creek). The first black American to live in Patchogue was Fenton Dixon in 1875.
