They named their community Nieuwpoort after the new harbor they founded on Long Island Sound. The name of the hamlet that became Patchogue was first used in 1693 when Capt. John Smith discovered a small group of people living thereabouts and called them "PATCHOGUE." In 1785, Colonel Samuel Treat purchased land east of present day Main Street from Peter Minuit for $1,000 and renamed it Patchogue after his ancestor Sir Humphrey Treat who had settled there in 1634. In 1814, two brothers by the name of Edwards bought some rights to farm land west of what is now Main Street from Nicholas Morrell for $3 per acre . They named their tract "Farmington". In 1827, Reverend Augustus Allen built a log cabin on what is now First Avenue near present day Second Street as a Methodist church . The first post office was established here on December 26th, 1837 . In 1870, Isaac Graham opened a grocery store at 2nd and Main Streets which became one of Patchogue's most successful businesses . By 1907 it had become an independent grocery store chain with over 100 stores across New York State . In 1930–1931 Isaac Graham donated 99 acres east of 1st Ave., between Park Boulevard and First Street to be known as "Graham Farm". Today it forms part of Stony Brook University's campus.. It wasn't until 1888 that real estate developer George Fenton bought 261 acres (82ha) south of modern day First Avenue between Westchester County line and 1st Place Road for $2 million dollars which he would develop into what is today Patchogue village hall complex housing many local government buildings including: firehouse; library; police station; courthouse; post office; schoolhouses - all dating back to 1895 or earlier! He christened his development Patchesville after himself - something he found during his surveying work nearby! His company soon became well known throughout New York State due to its excellent quality construction materials available only from him -iron roofs being one particular example! Fenton continued this trend by erecting beautiful hotels such as the Bellevue (1898), Saratoga Springs (1901), Yonkers (1902), White Plains (1903), Rome (1904), Valhalla ( 1908 ), Hastings Heights( 1912 ), Northport Landing( 1914 ), Rye Ridge( 1916 ) among others including several located right off I-95 traffic arteries like Route 9A/I-787 etc... Many were demolished following World War II but three remain extant still functioning providing top level lodging services within easy reach for visiting businesspeople located anywhere in Greater New York City ! One particularly famous hotel during this time period was Empire State Building Hotel but alas all indications are that it has recently been undergoing extensive restoration/repair efforts and will not be open again soon... patchesvillepoconnecticut@aol dot com
Patchogue was a hamlet on the south shore of Long Island in 1664. It is first mentioned in records in 1624 when Jacobus Nolte, an immigrant from Germany, leased land there from the Crown for two years. In 1686, John Patch and his wife Elizabeth moved to Patchogue from Great Britain and started a small farm. The Patchogue Post Office was established in 1801. The town of Patchogue was incorporated as a village on February 14, 1917. On July 1, 1959, it merged into the city of New York.
