Oswego is a town in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 8,724 at the 2010 census. The name is French for " Oxenhead". The first permanent settler in what would become Oswego County was Nicholas Webster in 1785. He and his wife were the first to clear land and build a log cabin on an abandoned Hudson River site near present-day Whitesville. In 1807, Webster married Lydia Beekman and they founded the town of Whiteville around their new home. The Websters were the original settlers who built most of the homes in Oswego County today. In 1814, Nathaniel Ogden established a farmstead on what became known asosite Road northeast of present-day Whiteville. This farmstead remains active to this day as part of the Ogden Farms agricultural business district. On July 1, 1821, Oswego Town College (later renamed Syracuse University) was chartered by Governor John Palfrey with land west of present-day Main Street taken from Whiteville Township for that purpose. The college moved to its current location on East State Street in 1924 after having been located at various locations including Oneida Falls (now Oneida), Vailsburgh (now West Seneca), and Whitesville since its founding in 1823. In 1870, two brothers - Augustus Kelley and Hiram Burden - started an oil well at Chenango Creek east of modern WhiteVILLE which produced oil until 1901 when it was shut down due to pollution restrictions placed upon the industry by then President Grover Cleveland during his presidency. These restrictions remain largely unbroken to this day as one such well has been reopened again recently by ConocoPhillips off Pennsylvania Avenue adjacent to Erie International Airport just outside Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area! All told there have been over 40 wells drilled within Renowned Well Drilling Company boundaries resulting in more than 2 million barrels of recoverable oil! Oswego also has rich history dating back to before European settlement with evidence dating back to 925 AD! A plaque erected at downtown's former Post Office contains only English words but detailed illustrations revealing an ancient Indian trading post called 'Kanapo' situated between Lake George and Lake Ontario; several arrowheads found there date back 4500 years! Today Kanapo is open both year round for tours using permission from park rangers as well as occasional photo ops for those interested!

Oswego is a town in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oswego County. The town was first settled by Germans in 1814. It was named after Oswego Lake in Greece. The first post office opened in 1827. In 1857, the town became part of Syracuse City and remained so until 1923 when it became its own separate municipality. In 1860, members of the General Assembly of New York passed a bill to form a new district for Oswego County and name it "Oswego", after General George Washington's home state of Virginia (then called North Carolina). The land for the new district was taken from Albany Township in Fulton County and given to Oswego Township residents on February 14, 1860. The original village of Oswego consisted only of a few hundred people who built log cabins near their spring water supply for harvesting honeybees during the early 1800s; today there are no visible remains remaining from that time period other than some small rocks scattered around the area now known as "Old Village" which still lies within present-day Oswegos borders. They did however erect an originally two story log schoolhouse on what is now Main Street in 1864-65 as part of their efforts to build schools throughout the township when they realized that not everyone wanted or could afford to attend public schools outside their homes - one reason why such buildings were quite rare throughout most parts of upstate New York during this era! Replacing this structure with a much larger brick building would be an eventful task due to its height ( measuring 60 feet high x 24 feet wide), but with help from local carpenters they managed to do just that and naming it "Pioneer School" which still stands today as one half mile east along Route 9 north from downtown where Pioneer Park now sits!

By 1922, Osswego had grown to become an incorporated municipality with a population of 3,746 people.
