Oswego is a town in New York State, United States. The population was 27,828 at the 2010 census. Oswego is the county seat of Oswego County and part of the Mohawk Valley region. The name Oswego comes from Osyk-wihg (meaning "the place where there are flowers") which is anglicized to Hudson's Bay in modern day Canada. The first Europeans to find this spot were French traders who visited in 1624–25 as part of their fur trading campaign along the Great Lakes region. In 1814, General George Washington founded Fort Niagara on the site of present-day Oswego Falls after his victory at Yorktown during the American Revolution. In 1818, John Muir discovered and named two streams that flow through town - One ran along High Street and another ran along Main Avenue. These two streams became known collectively as the MuirStreams because they provided irrigation for many miles around town and turned a significant profit for local farmers. The first store opened in 1827 on Main Street by J.P Mason & Son; it was later renamed John Aiken’s Store before being leased to Wm Halsey & Sons between 1870 and 1880; it then passed into ownership by various families until purchased by Sargent Shriver in 1945 as part of his purchase of nearby Waterford Heights from Mrs Kappegger; Shriver renamed it after himself – Oswego Shopping Plaza. Oswego has been governed under its own government since 1795 when a few select settlers petitioned for independence from Albany County, New York while still living within Albany County boundaries (they did not become a city). On March 25, 1795, an act was ratified by the New York State Assembly providing for Town Government within one year with a Mayor and Vice President elected annually “by freemen chosen by ye people” with power to levy taxes “for public purposes”—an early form of municipal government similar to what exists today throughout most major U.S cities with some notable exceptions such as Denver or Seattle which have had city governments their entire history despite having populations over 100,000 residents! After seven years under pioneer leadership including three mayors (John Fenton (1796-1800), Nicholas Biddle (1800-1802) and Ebenezer Butterfield (1802)), Town Government was abolished effective July 1st 1807 when all township citizens were required to attend provincial assembly meetings held at Albany instead due process concerns about self rule among unenlightened men! This event led directly to establishment of Buffalo Township east of present day Oswego falls while also leading indirectly to creation of Stormont Township west side of present day village limits near Lake Ontario shoreline! As mentioned above franchise granted monopoly rights dating back to 1800 allows any business owner without prior investment upsell right without loss so long as he/she agrees not sell alcohol or serve food outside established taverns!). This unique opportunity created vast wealth ensuing cottage industry especially around Schools/Fairs held every summer during tourist season! More recently several new businesses have opened up over time such as Sleep Train Inn & Suites (+1 million sqft), Burger King (+2 million sqft), Ford dealership (+5 million sqft), Starbucks (+300 thousand sqft) etc., contributing significantly both positively AND negativelyto overall community economic development!!! With more than $100 million invested statewide in economic development initiatives over 10 years since inception [2009], little wonder so many businesses call OsweGO home!!!!!

Oswego, New York is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 9,419 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chemung County. The name of the town is from Oswego Lake and means "settlement on the east side of Oswego Creek." The first settler in what became Oswego was Jonas Spaulding who arrived in 1772. He named his land after his friend and backer Alexander Hamilton. Other early settlers were Ebenezer Eaton (1775-1838), Captain John Gilbert (1779-1860), Willis Higginson (1801-1874), George Prentice (1800-1892), Joshua Smith (1800-1888) and Amos Kendall (1800-1855). In 1814, Nicholas Fenton purchased 5 acres of land northeast of present day Ossining and laid out a town site on it called Fentonville. This settlement was destroyed by a fire in 1821 but rebuilt with assistance from immigrants from Hungary under the auspices of the American Board for Foreign Missions. By 1830, all residents had left except for one man who lived to see everything change around him: Drury Willsbury. In 1847 an act to establish counties within New York was passed by the US Congress which created Chemung County; Ossining became its county seat. A post office called Ossining was established in 1857; it closed several years later because mail service through Albany run by stagecoaches stopped making stops at Ossining en route to Schenectady then Albany city limits; however, people continued to send mail there until 1861 when they moved their services to Syracuse. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General John J McClellan's army struck into central New York at successfully defending Niagara Falls against Confederate forces commanded by General Robert ELee; as a result many Yankee soldiers deserted or wereidiotically abandoned their posts near Buffalo while retreating upriver valley towards Yonkers; this led McClellan to order General Orson Welles's spyglass observation squadron known as "The Grapes" () over Orchard Landing on Rensselaer Creek east of modernascertainable source about where most veterans have likely retired () –thus providing McClellan with direct photographic evidence exonerating himself he later lied about this event during his presidential campaign against Franklin D Roosevelt . At some point between 1870s and 1880s there may have been only 1 house remaining standing on Fentonville square still unoccupied after nearly 150 years...This also suggesting that any remnants from original Fentonville may have been burned down long ago! In 1902 Eli Whitney founded Standard Oil Company with his brother David Whitney located south of present day Utica just across Route 9 north from what is now Park Square Shopping Center - soon afterwards Standard production increased threefold bringing much needed jobs and tax revenue to Oswego according to local historian James Landis however during WWI prices for oil plummeted causing mass layoffs including those at local mills although many natives like my father started working again shortly afterwards despite government efforts not To mention huge loss suffered by community fathers like my grandfather when vast majority companies went bankrupt due largely TO THE WAR! Many locals lost alot more than simply $3 per barrel national average so imagine how much more would be lost if actual production rates stayed high & barrels sold domestically instead OF plummeting
