It was installed by Mr. and Mrs. Prentice in their home on Main Street and operated for about three years before being replaced by a more recent model. In 1951, the Oswego Rifle Club initiated a project to purchase new red dot sights for their rifles. They were successful in raising enough money to buy two sets of new red dot sights from Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc., of Hartford, Connecticut. The new sights were installed on their rifles and are still operational today. The Oswego Rifle Club has continued to use red dot sights for target practice and competition ever since they became available and continues to be one of the most popular shooting clubs in town!

Oswego, New York is a city located in Upstate New York. The population was 8,715 at the 2010 census. Oswego is the County Seat of Oswego County and is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the Mohawk Indian Nation reserve. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Oswego was by fur traders from Quebec in 1764. In 1804, General John Smith's forces destroyed a fort erected by French colonists near present day Syracuse to deny them supplies coming up the river. The next year, after an abortive attack on Canadian troops under Major General Nicholas Coontz, American forces burned down Fort Orange on the banks of the Mohawk River after defeating British forces at Battle of Oriskany Ridge. This event helped start what would become known as "Americanization" of Upper Canada--a process that eventually led to British control over much of North America. The town site was surveyed in 1814 by Acting Surveyor James Ketchum and named for Colonel Augustus Osgood (1767-1846), who had served as military commander during the War of 1812 and had developed a reputation as one of America's most able cavalry commanders. The first store opened its doors in December 1819; other early businesses included a sawmill, gristmill, bakery and distillery; all closed within a few years due to competition from industry elsewhere in upstate New York or outside the United States altogether. A new courthouse was built between 1830 and 1830 on land donated by Captain Amos Davenport; it became known as Davenport Square after him. A post office called Oswego was established at this location on November 11, 1827; it operated until 1840 when it was moved to Syracuse proper.
