Oswego is a town in Orleans County, New York, United States. The population was 7,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oswego's name comes from the Otsego River and its namesake, General George Washington's Headquarters at Fort Oswego on the river's east bank. The first permanent settler in what is now Oswego was Nicholas Hovey in 1785. He founded a trading post on an island in the river just downstream from present-day downtown Oswego. A more important early settlement was made by Alexander Caldwell on a peninsula near modern-day Webster Street and Interstate 95 south of town in 1812. In 1827, Captain John Stevens opened up a ferry service across the Hudson River to bring goods and passengers between Albany and Schenectady; this helped develop trade within OsweGOuldown as well as making it easier for people to get around within the boundaries of both townships. In 1830, when Kingston became an organized village, it included parts of both settlements; however, only Kingston proper adopted the name "Oswego" for itself in 1840. The towns were merged back into one municipality on April 1, 1860 under Mayor Ebenezer Herrick Jr.'s leadership (the merger had been accepted by Vote of her constituents). During World War II much of Oswegone's manufacturing took place at Fort Drum Army Ammunition Plant which also produced munitions for American forces overseas during that conflict; however most production stopped after 1945 because political reasons prevented America from becoming embroiled in another European war again following World War II. The current downtown core was built between 1966 and 1971 when local architects designed what then was considered high-end housing developments called "Esquire". These communities are now long gone but their memory lives on through nearby stores that still sell items associated with those days such as postcards advertising Fort Drum during those years or even some remnants today like beer pails with red lettering still used to hold spilled beer!

Oswego, New York is a town in central Upstate New York, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Oswego County. The town was first settled in 1795 and named after George Washington's birthplace on Mount Vernon Estate in Virginia. The first post office in Oswego was established on December 3, 1835. The name "Oswego" originated from an Iroquois word meaning "place for ducks". In 1849, the village of Ossining took over the post office functions and the name changed again to Oswego in 1853 due to local opposition to the name change being made by Ossining merchants who were worried about competing with their larger neighbor Lake George. In 1860, a rapid influx of German immigrants led tothe creation of a new German settlement called Oberon which quickly outgrew Osgoodeetown. On February 8, 1865, as part of President Abraham Lincoln's Executive Order 4486 that aimed to end slavery within three years, Ossining became one of four towns consolidated into Oneida County under the leadership of Judge Robert Halsey Smith. At this time there were only 720 residents living in what would become Oswego Township; however by 1870 there had grown to 1,956 residents making it one of the more populous towns east of Buffalo NY In 1915-16 when World War I began and many businesses closed down because they could not pay taxes levied by warring countries such as Russia/ czarist Empire (see: Russian Revolution), many people decided to move away from rural Upstate New York for employment opportunities outside of war-torn Europe It wasn't until 1931 when officials decided that enough growth had taken place and created a second Town Board specifically for development purposes within its original borders This allowed for further annexation by other municipalities including North Tonawanda and finally Syracuse On April 3rd 1934 local school board member Mrs. Maynard announced that she would be running for election as Superintendent which caused much public outcry as no woman had ever served as superintendent in upstate New York before She won easily becoming the first woman ever elected as Superintendent with 52% against 32% run by incumbent Mr. John Pritchard
