In 1785, it was part of Albany County and then Montgomery County. The village formed from a tract of land granted to Pieter de Graffenried by King George III in 1786. It began as an agricultural community with many homes built on large lots that could be used for horses or cows. A gristmill and sawmill were built about 1800; both were destroyed by fire in 1827. A post office was established at Oswego in 1814. In 1824, the village became part of Erie County when that county was created from parts of Albany and Montgomery counties. The first Post Office building (now known as the Oswego Grange Museum) was erected on Main Street (now First Avenue) in 1830 by Joshua Hildebrandt, Sr., who served as Postmaster until 1840. The first postmaster general was John Waddell (1828-29). One early resident, Reverend Jeremiah Purdy (1797-1868), organized a local church which still meets today in the old Masonic Hall on North Main Street (now West Second Avenue). Another early resident was Moses DeWitt Clinton (1772-1846), one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and one of America's Founding Fathers.Among Oswego's prominent residents during its earliest years were: Darius Noyes (1793-1871), Aaron Burr (1795-1881), General James Bragg(1802-75), Salmon Pelly(1800-82) and Augustus Kelley(1800-89). On July 12, 1830, Ebenezer Scudder sold his interest in Fort Niagara to Colonel Robert Fulton for $2 million dollars plus expenses; this transaction made Fulton President & Cmdr., constructor & manager for all river navigation on the Susquehanna River eastward from Buffalo Bayou This event also marks Brooklyn Heights's incorporation into NYC as a borough on April 24th 1870 Fulton later built what is now One Penn Plaza across 4teenth Street from where he had stood before purchase In 1835 Scudder donated his remaining land including Ft Niagara to become Park Row property which still includes much current day infrastructure - including Darien Lake near present day Union Station
