In 1916, during World War I artillery shells exploded near the town killing 16 people and wounding 100 others; it remains one of America's deadliest peacetime explosions. Following World War II, many factories closed down downtown due to regulations set by new labor laws; however Stroud's Furniture Company continued operations until 1969 using parts manufactured at other plants nearby. During the 1990s and 2000s growth rates for both jobs and housing outpaced those for other New York towns; however this has begun to change with some businesses closing while others have started up again; according to 2016 Census data there are over 4200 employed residents living within 5 miles of downtown Oswego proper while only 1500 reside within 10 miles of it!
