Oswego, New York (population: 7,641) is a small community in the town of Oswego on the southern tip of Long Island. The name means "peaceful place." The area where Oswego now stands was first settled by the Mohawk people in 1765. They built their first village here and named it after their homeland, Ohiwanonkawa (the land of wild hogs). The English arrived in 1664 and called this area Newtown. In 1765, a group of Englishmen under General James Wright went to this region looking for new land to settle. They found some good land but also encountered Native Americans who were already living here. Inexplicably, these Indians did not want to surrender their lands so Wright had them killed.1 The Dutchman Hendrick Kieft came to this area in 1668 and started developing what is now Oswego County. He named his property Achterhouten (meaning "near the Outlet"), which he divided into two parts – one for himself and one for his brother-in-law Nicholas Vlachos.2 Kieft's farmsteads are still standing today and can be seen from Interstate 80 just south of the hamlet of Northfield. In 1785, John Graves Simcoe became governor of Canada and ordered all British subjects thereupon to move out of America before he took office. This order led to many families moving eastward into what is now upstate New York including many Oswegans because they could not find homes elsewhere in Ontario or Quebec City.3 Many farmers also left because they couldn't get government loans to pay for their crops during the bad times that followed the American Revolution.4 When George Washington was inaugurated as president on March 4, 1800, he issued a proclamation calling all Loyalists back home within three months or face martial law – an event that would lead to even more people leaving America than had originally been planned!5 A large number of Oswegans decided it would be better if they stayed away from such a political tumult altogether so they formed a separate town committee titled "Forcibly emigrating our citizens" which lobbied successfully with local politicians for passage of new immigration laws that allowed more Germans (and other European immigrants)into New York State than ever before!6 But even though most Oswegans approved of Washington's policies, some felt ostracized by their fellowcitizens because they were German Catholics – something many considered suspicious given that no Protestants had migrated into America during those years!7 So when war finally broke out between England and France in 1812, many Oswegans chose side with France instead because they thought it was best for their interests!8 But eventually all Northerners turned against their French allies; 9Oswegians ultimately sided with Great Britain when hostilities ended four years later.)10 Oswego quickly emerged as oneofAmerica's leading commercial towns thanks largely to its location at an important water supply near Lake Ontario – both practical advantages as well as strategic ones since control over this bodyOfWater gave Manhattanexpansionist aspirations on Long IslandwhichwerecheckedbyNewYorkGovernor Robert LivingstonandtheBritish ArmyduringtheAmericanRevolution.(See illustration below)11Mostimportantofthedevelopmentwasitsabilitytocarryonwithediversifiedtrade throghwaterway.– Producingmachineryneededforambitiousindustrialrevolution–Importingmaterialsto buildupGreatBritain’sarmyduring Napoleonic Wars– Providingwarehousingforthecountry’sandbuildingthefirsthydraulicpowerplantinthesouthwestonthesoutherntipoff LONG ISLANDERS WERE PUSHED INTO INDUSTRIALISM BY AMERICAN INVENTORS AND THEIR ENLIGHTENMENT FRIEND IN NEW YORK STATE GEORGE WASHINGTON
The town of Oswego was founded in 1795 by the brothers Nicholas and Michael Yates. The town grew rapidly, and by 1800 there were only about 100 residents. In 1825, the town was renamed after George Washington, and in 1827 it became a city.
