In 1814, during the War of 1812 against Britain, General George Washington visited Oswego and ordered his army to stay for two weeks while supplies were brought downriver to Fort Orange on the Ontario River. At that time it was one of only two towns in upstate New York withstanding British attacks; other residents had fled before hostilities started.
In 1840s and 1850s Oswego experienced rapid growth due to waves of Irish immigrants who arrived seeking work opportunities in mills or farms near Buffalo or Syracuse.
During World War II there was heavy military activity taking place around Oswego including fighter planes manufacturing at nearby Wright Air Force Base

Oswego, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The population was 5,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oswego–Auburn, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Oswego occurs in 1614 when troops from Albany under Colonel James Johnson moved into what is now Oswego County to suppress a pro-French uprising there. In 1692, Governor William Dawes granted land to the Dutch settlers on Long Island for their share in founding New Netherland; and this grant led to a strong Dutch presence in Oswego County until after Confederation when all English possessions were given away to America. In 1704, during King George II's War with France, British General Wolfe besieged Fort Stanwix on Long Island and destroyed most of the colony's supplies including its munitions arsenal and storehouses where over 1 million pounds (500 metric tons) of powder and munitions were stored. This event led to increased French activity along the southern border as they realized that their supply lines were open to attack by an Anglo-Canadian force without fear of retaliation from Britain. After Howe's victory at Quebec City against the French army in 1759, British forces burned down much of Montreal while other parts continued functioning as French Toronto; this destruction caused great anger among local people who had lost property or businesses in the firestorm. In retaliation, 724 Indian warriors from neighboring Connecticut organized themselves into an alliance called The Mohawk Confederacy which attacked British posts throughout North America culminating with Battle of Saratoga which ended British control over North America. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction then-Governor Andrew Johnson ordered Federal troops withdrawn from south Georgia and Alabama due to fears that such large withdrawals would lead to violence between white Democrats and black Republican veterans. The town of Oswego was founded in 1785 by Alexander McDougall and named for the Oswegians, a tribe of Native Americans. In 1814, the town was renamed after General George Washington because he had been its namesake. The first store in the town was called The Hermitage and it opened in 1815. Over time, other stores were built and businesses flourished. By 1830, the population of Oswego had increased to over 100 people. In 1847, the first railroad arrived in Oswego and soon there were numerous businesses based in the town. By 1860, there were over 200 residents living in Oswego. The town experienced a decline during the Civil War but slowly regained its prosperity afterwards. During World War II,Oswego played an important role as an airfield for New York Air Force Base at nearby Farmingdale Airport. After World War II,Oswego experienced a renaissance with many new businesses opening up including restaurants and nightlife venues.
