The village of Dover was incorporated in 1853 and merged into Oswego in 1903. The first settlers in what is now Oswego were white traders and farmers from Connecticut who arrived around 1795. In 1807, the area became part of Albany County before being transferred to Otsego County in 1821. In 1830, a group of Dutch-speaking farmers founded a community called Hekkerhof on the east side ofriver near present-day Dover Village. They named their settlement after Pieter van der Houten, an early farmer and member of the Hudson's Bay Company who had settled in this region in 1676. van der Houten had been sent as an envoy by Governor John Vrooman to secure land for his Dutch colonists northeast of Fort Orange on Lake Ontario. Some time after he arrived, he built a cabin on the site which served as their headquarters until they moved to Hekkerhof following their failed attempt to establish a fur trading post there during winter 1799-1800 under guidance from General George Clinton. Hekkerhof changed hands several times over its history; it was abandoned by 1800, then taken over by another group ofDutch-speaking farmers who renamed it "Hendrikken", after Hendrick de Vries (1664 – 1738), one of the earliest successful fur traders in North America. From here until about 1840 when it came under English control due to Lord George Keith's purchase at Albany Fallsaght (present day Rochester), it functioned as an infantry barracks and garrison for various British posts along with serving as both a school and religious center for local Native Americans including many Mohawk Indians who lived nearby onthe banks ofthe river oppositeHekkerhofs farmsteads." AfterKeith's acquisition, most ofhekkerman residents chose either to remain British subjects or move westward away from British influence whereupon many buildings within hekkermanremained standing" however some did move back eastward into what is now Otsego County following purchases by other families including those from Niagara Falls (renamed Niagara Falls City) . As late as 1870 only 5%ofthe total population still lived within vicinityofHekkerhof while 100%of all children born there died prior thereto ." Following incorporation os we go , numerous businesses opened up such as ? commercial grocery store operated by Capt A J Bowers opened January 2nd 1865 renamed Mrs Manners store May 4th 1865 ; blacksmith shop started operations September 12th 1861 renamed Blacksmith Shop No 3 October 9th 1863 ; dry goods store started operations November 15th 1861 called The Grapes Store December 8th 1861 . This particular business closed down due to competition from larger stores but reopened later that year under new name Farmer Bros & Co . Februar y 6 th 1870 . Millinery store started operations February 25 th 1870 with pretty girl named Sarah Elliott as Owner/ Manager; this business also closed down but reopened later that year under new name Mrs L D Elliott’s Millinery March 14 th 1870."

The name comes from Onondaga Indian word "ossa-woga," meaning "place where the water flows." The first Europeans to visit the area were Dutch traders in 1614. In 1764, General George Washington and his army discovered and invaded Canada on their way to attack Montreal. When they reached Oswego, they decided to ford the Chenango River and encampment which became known as Fort George Wright after General Wright's troops camped there in 1764. In 1814, during the War of 1812, British forces burned down an Indian trading post near present-day Syracuse while American forces laid siege to Fort Erie. This event is sometimes called the Battle of Oswego because American Major John Armstrong's force destroyed a bridge over the river there on September 12th1814 before retreating back across it a few days later. From 1800 until 1850 or so people lived off hunting and fishing licenses that had been given out by Moses Clemens Sr., one of Albany’s most powerful landowners at that time; he also helped found Utica College in 1807 with funding from James Clinton Livingston (one of America’s first wealthy men).Oswegos used to be quite prosperous but are now slowly recovering due to tourism being more popular than agriculture here these days; however many businesses have closed over this last 10 years or so due mainly to lawsuits brought against them by Eastern New York residents for using state resources without getting paid for it – something often referred to as “ extractive capitalism” .
