In 1840 nine local farmers formed what would become known as the Farmers' Association to fight for better prices for their produce at auctions held by state authorities to decide prices for wheat and other crops that year. That same year saw another milestone when Josiah Gregg built a gristmill on Village Green which allowed village residents to grind corn into meal for their own consumption or sale to others within walking distance from their homes.
