Oswego is a small town in New York County, just south of Albany. The population was 5,519 at the 2010 census. The name Oswego comes from an Algonquian word meaning "place where salmon run." The first European to visit Oswego was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1496. He named it Ingegna della Riva (Ingenue's Reach). The first European settler in the area was Nicholas Saraceno in 1624. It was not until 1764 that John Bowlby, who claimed land on what is now Oswego Street, built the first permanent house here. In 1807, General George Washington founded Fort Niagara on what is now State Route 9 near present-day Ballston Spa. On July 8, 1807, he ordered Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson to build a road from Canandaigua through this fort and into Lake Ontario for military purposes only. This road became known as Wellington Road and remains today as part of I-87 between Buffalo and Rochester. On October 20th of that year, Oswego residents met to discuss their concerns with government officials about taxes they were paying without representation or voting rights. They elected two representatives to form a Select Committee to look into their grievances and recommend changes/a better system for taxation in the future. On November 3rd of that year they presented their findings to the Assembly but did not receive any response before going home because no action had been taken upon their recommendations. On December 6th following a local election held by select committee members it was announced that Reverend Abraham Fields would be the new Town Clerk & recorder which made him responsible for all legal proceedings including court cases; however this power was revoked after only one term due to public outcry over his appointment shortly before he resigned because he could not understand English well enough to do so effectively given the high volume of court case filings being received from constituents! Oswego has experienced some major economic milestones throughout its history including: 1) establishment of dairy production beginning with Alexander Dowling's purchase of 12 cows in 1865 2) increasing agricultural production with improved irrigation techniques during Prohibition which led to increased jobs opportunities 3) rapid growth during World War II due in large part to munitions manufacturing 4) increase in development activity around Ballston Spa leading to more housing developments 5) current period marked by continuing growth and investment

Oswego, New York is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 7,924 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oneida County. Along with Syracuse and Rochester, Oswego is one of the three towns in New York City that are not part of the city proper. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Oswego Town was made on April 12th 1793 by Dr. Samuel Gregg and his family under the name of Fort George on an acorn lot north of present-day Elmira. This original white settlers were led by Colonel John Graves Simcoe and Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Schenectady from Kingston (now Schenectady). The first post office in this town was established on May 10th 1802 by James DeWitt Clinton with the name of Fort George Post Office. Fort George was abandoned after only six months due to lack of supplies and Revolver War hostilities between Great Britain and America which began July 16th 1794 killed six Americans including Captain David Hughes who had landed at Fort George with munitions for American forces under British General Howe
Oswego is a town in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 1,769 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Orleans, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Oswego was John Armstrong who arrived on July 24, 1786 with his family from Virginia. He and his wife Deborah built a log cabin on the east side ofpresent day US Route 14 about two miles (3 km) north of present day Oswego Lake. They were the first people to live there. In 1813 James Smeaton came overland from Philadelphia and established himself in present day downtown Oswego as an innkeeper and trader. In 1814 he built a log house on Main Street which still stands today as the basis for the current First Baptist Church building on that site. James Smeaton also operated a gristmill on Phelps Road within town limits until 1840 when it was replaced by an early frame mill operated by Samuel Dibble which still stands today near milepost 5 on route 14A south of town center. In 1798 George Washington visited Oswego and held a public meeting at First Baptist Church to commemorate his visit to Canada some years earlier. That same year Daniel Boone traveled through this area scout hunting for new land to settle and returned home in time to plant apple trees near where Main Street meets Phelps Road just outside town limits before leaving again for North Carolina in late 1799 or early 1800s according to various sources including one written in 1898 by Hosea Ballou located 4 miles (6 km) northwest of town limits along CR 523 between White Rock Lake and Bald Eagle Mountain). George Washington's visit marked both the first official U.S.–Canadian contact since France had been founded around this time period as well as beginning what would become an important era of trade with Great Britain across many different regions including parts of central New York during this period called "the golden age" of American commerce thanks largely to such pioneers as James Armstrong and Daniel Boone who crossed into western Pennsylvania via way back then known as Dutchown Valley - later renamed Erie County - during this era prior to several major natural disasters which disrupted agricultural production throughout much of central New York during the mid19th century including major flooding events that destroyed hundreds if not thousandsof homes, crop failures leading directlyto Massacres such as those taking place throughout much of central New York involving Native Americans like Pontiac's Rebellionin Michaux County near Niagara Falls), resulting eventuallyin large areas being abandoned due primarilyto lackOf food production after decades long famine conditions afflicting muchof rural America during this timeperiod however some immigrants like George Washington did manageTo establish small towns throughout key portionsOf eastern Pennsylvania & northwesternNew Jerseyduring this era including Bethlehem PA – homeTown OF John Armstrong – soon followed suit followingWashington's visit; makingOsweGOoneofnumerousimportantPennsylvania&NewJerseytownsDuringthisera].
