Ossining is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Ossining is one of the five towns in Ulster County that form the Syracuse-New Rochelle-East Elmira Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Ossining was Nathaniel Strong and his family who arrived on horseback from Connecticut in 1785. They were followed by other settlers including John Morse and his wife Deborah Morse who settled in 1789. The town began to grow when Isaac Brock established a blacksmith shop and store near where First Street now stands in 1809. Brock also built a gristmill which became an important part of the local economy for many years. In 1812, Irishman Cornelius Vanderbilt purchased land east of Ossining from John White for $1,000. He then donated it to the Town of Ossining which had been formed two years earlier as a result of an act of Assembly approved on November 2, 1811. In 1814, he sold additional land to Gideon Welles and Nicholas Goodrich for $2,500 each which added up to . After more than 50 years as an agricultural community with significant trade between New York City and Albany (the state capital), Ossining entered into what has come to be known as its "golden age". This period saw major technological advances such as the construction of railways through central New York and new mills constructed along banks of the Mohawk River Valley Streams; growth in trade; increased iron production; rapid expansion of agriculture due to improved irrigation systems; and increasing numbers occupantless dwellings (manufactured homes). During this time there were numerous small businesses incorporated including two breweries (Harrison's Brewery & Stout Brewery) while furniture stores (Foster's Furniture Store), hotels (Morse Hotel), grocery stores (Gideon Welles' Grocery Store), ice cream parlors (Plymouth Creamery) and other cultural attractions developed like amateur theatres featuring plays and concerts throughout the season. An early commercial center sprang up around Broome Street with several merchants beginning business there such as Singer Sewing Machine Company/ retailer Samuel Sanger before becoming well known nationwide including Wm Randolph Hearst who bought it during World War I for over $10 million dollars making it one of America's most valuable shopping malls today!
