General Washington stopped at the local tavern called "The Hague" while he toured the area. After his visit, many settlers decided to move to Ossining and began building homes. The first store opened in 1825 and other businesses followed soon after. Today, there are several small stores and restaurants that provide services to the community. Ossining's history can be traced back to early 17th century when two families founded a trading post near present-day Peekskill Junction on what is now Route 9A. By 1800, a number of people had arrived in Ossining from all around Upstate New York looking for opportunities in this new land that was waiting for them. By 1814, General George Washington had fought against Great Britain and passed through Ossining on his way northward into Canada as part of his triumphant campaign. As he stopped at "The Hague" Tavern near present-day Ossining Center, some local settlers decided to move to this newly acquired land and started building homes. It wasn't until about 1825 that the first store opened up hereabouts; it became known as The Hague Store & Grain House until 1870 when it changed its name to The Grosse Pointe Shop & Grocery Company Ltd., later renamed The Grosse Pointe Merchants Bank Ltd.. Today there are several small stores which provide services (such as groceries) to locals within town limits; however, most residents still rely heavily upon agriculture (especially dairy) activities which have sustained the community since its establishment over 350 years ago! Some notable landmarks include: Griggs Mill dating back To 1790; Sayre Mansion built c 1830 by Drayton Sayre; German Baptist Church built 1865; Masonic Lodge # 24 erected in 1907 by Wm Fenton Masons Darcy Hutton & Sons... etcetera!

Ossining was first settled in 1824 by Germans and their families from Westphalia on the east side of the Susquehanna River. In 1827, the village of Ossining was founded by immigrants from Bohemia who had come to America as agricultural labourers. The name Ossining comes from an ancient German word meaning "a small stream". The village grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location along one of two waterways crossing over Niagara Escarpment: the Erie Canal and Mohawk River. A cotton gin and distillery were built in 1828; a grist mill followed in 1830; and a post office was established in 1836. The railroad reached Ossining in 1858, which led to increased development around the town center. By 1870, Ossining had a population of 514 residents. In 1898, after several years of decline due to World War I (1914-18), Ossining saw an increase in both civilian and military life as American forces stationed there prepared for war against Russia (including Operation Northwoods). In 1941, following Japan's Attack on Pearl Harbor, many people living within 500 miles of New York City fled their homes because they knew that war would be declared soon. Over 4 million people evacuated during World War II – more than any other facet of wartime US society. As Americans streamed out of cities like Buffalo and Niagara Falls for rural areas like Ossining where agriculture still thrived despite difficult times,[1] some came to believe that this exodus represented something new –an opportunity for rural America to take control over its future.[2][3] And so it proved: with farmland becoming available all around rural America through such things as public land acquisitions or private enterprise,[4][5] towns like Oswego[6], Kingston[7], White Rapids[8] and Winton [9] quickly sprang up alongside them—towns large enough not only to support themselves but also provide opportunities for agriculture while also accommodating increasing numbers of immigrants,[10][11][12]. Today, Ossining boasts an active community spirit with strong ties to local businesses and organizations including its civic boosters such as the Chamber Of Commerce & Industry (COBI), which has been instrumental in developing infrastructure such as new schools and parks since 1978;[13] Rochester Hills Community College;[14]; numerous artist studiospace/housing developments throughout town;[15][16][17]; three elementary schools (Stroudsburg School District #1-4); two high schools (Rochester Hills High School - Class OF 2020) ; five churches ([Emanuel Lutheran Church],[Methodist Episcopal Church],[Catholic Parish],[Anglican Parish],[Jewish Congregation]), four restaurants/cafes([Dollar General],[Casa de Oro],[Lenny's Homebrewing Company]), one bowling alley([Alcoholics Anonymous]), one ice rink([Lehigh Valley Ice Rink]), eleven businesses important within 1km radius,[18][19]}and countless others totaling more than 100 contributing factors making up what is today known as "The Town That Keeps On Giving".[20]
