He died in 1827 and was buried there with his wife Mary (née Yates) Fenton until her death in 1865. Mrs. Fenton later became an ancestor of Congressman Nicholas Katzenbach (1884-1967). A post office called Ossining was established in 1828, but it did not remain open long; it closed on September 24, 1830. In 1840, two men named Ebenezer Lyonand started a gristmill that still flourishes today; they also built a schoolhouse and other buildings around this time. By 1850, Ossining had about 100 residents; by 1860 its population had increased to over 200 people thanks to growth in farming and manufacturing within the larger town of Yonkers to the south-west (the towns merged into one entity circa 1870). Lyonand's mills continued producing flour until 1886 when they switched to papermaking due to technological advances; their paper mill remained operational until 1902 when it burned down due to lack of insurance money. Today only ruins remain from this once thriving community - an eerie reminder of how times have changed since these businesses once thrived beside each other on Main Street just outside present day Ossining!
