In 1855, John Fenton started a grocery store in what is now downtown Ossining under the name "Wineyard & Fenton". At that time, it was one of only two grocery stores open in central upstate New York! The store continued to operate until 1967 when it closed due to poor financial health. In 1865, Jens Hansen founded Haverford School which became Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1898. Today's Fairleigh Dickinson University operates out of several buildings on Main Street between Hudson Avenue and Park Avenue in downtown Ossining (the original building). It wasn't until after World War II that production began at the mill which had been shut down due to wartime restrictions on munitions production by Manhattan Project scientists working at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) near Princeton Junction from 1945-1946. Aftermarket parts for many cars were produced here including those for LincolnMercury models used from 1951-1960 as well as Nash-Kelvin seats from 1957-1964; these vehicles are sometimes referred to as "Old Ossining" models because they share many features with their predecessors but are not actually made or built by Oldsmobile/Dodge/ Chrysler etc., but instead by independent contractors using parts sourced through IAS availability during this period
