Ossining, New York is a town in Upstate New York, located on the north bank of the Hudson River. The first people who lived in what is now Ossining were Algonquian Indians who arrived in search of new land between 500 and 1000 AD. The Dutch founded Fort Orange (now Albany) in 1624 and began trading with Native Americans here. In 1714 grants were made for land around what is now Ossining Creek that included parts of today's town. The area became known as "Albany Township" because it was under government jurisdiction there until 1807 when it was transferred to upstate New York state via an act of Congress. In 1814 Albany Township boundaries were redrawn so as not to include what is now Ossining Creek within it; this change also occurred in 1830 when Erie County was created from portions of Upstate New York state and those boundaries remained unchanged until 1861 when Oswego County was formed from parts of Erie and Niagara counties respectively. In 1836 John Montresor bought 2/3rds of allertown east of present-day State Route 8 from Aaron Burr for $1 cash plus 4 guns which he later sold for $25 total to James Kappegananou who donated it back to Burr in 1840 after his conviction for treason against America during the War Between States had been published (). In 1848 Frederick Augustus Noble bought 1/3rds ownershipof allertown west of present day State Route 8 from James Kappegananou for $10 cash (). Noble donated it back to Burr two years later after his conviction for perjury related to his sale ()). In 1860 Oswego County was formed from portions of Erie and Niagara counties respectively (). At this time most Ofersing residents left due primarily to joblessness following reconstruction efforts following American Civil War (). Many Ontarians living near Buffalo moved into Oswego County during this time period due to its proximity thereto(). After Ferrytown lost its status as a village due largely to population growth within neighboring Canandaigua Townshend Village ()), many residents chose insteadto move into Ossining where they could enjoy good healthful air quality (), affordable housing (), excellent schools (), farmers markets (),and easy accessto transportation (). Today much Ofersing remains intact while much outside city limits has been replaced by more subdivisions., culters,-housing developments - etc... While someresidential buildings have been preserved or renovated with new facade design,, most remain single story dwellings with few if any features above ground level (. Although exceptions exist such as a former post office building on Main Street that has been converted into a hotel ),mostOswego communities havelargely adopted suburban form with large homes set behind high walls facing streets only . There are still several small clusters remaining scattered throughout northwestern Onondaga county including Oneonta (), Watkins Glen (the largest being just east off US 9), Peekskill (), Kingston ()...)
