Other major employers include Alcoa Corporation, First Interstate National Bank and Pruett Paper Products Incorporated. It lies on the border of Ossining and Sleepy Hollow townships and has a total area of 14 square miles (39 km²). The first documented mention of Ossining was in 1086 when it was known as "Onossa". The name derived from an Indian word meaning "place where there is water." In 1684, Ebenezer Gaylord bought land in what is now Ossining and renamed it after his family's ancestral home in Scotland, Dunfermline House. The town hall was built in 1868 on the east side of Town Street between Albany Road and Kingston Avenue. In 1886, John Fenton donated 8 acres (3 ha) to get rid of swampy ground that extended into several other townships in order to build a new city park called Queen's Park. Queen's Park became home to many prominent residents including General George Washington who played football games there during his visits to Westchester County during the Revolutionary War. In 1904-1905, troops from World War I encampment Camp Upton were quartered at Queen's Park after their arrival at Fort Erie on Ontario Island for training purposes. Theodore Roosevelt spent time at Dunfermline House while he served as Governor of New York in the early 20th century. He also stayed at Queen's Park when he visited Westchester County for campaigning purposes before being elected President in November 1912. After leaving office, he moved into nearby White Plains with his wife Eleanor Roosevelt until her death in 1976 followed by his own death two years later aged 94 years old at Queens Park.. In 1919-, one year before Prohibition began,[2] Ossining had its first grocery store which became Empire Grocery & Liquor Company[3]. Prohibition ended four years later[4]. From 1920-21 through 1933-[5], Empire operated as both a grocery store[6] and liquor monopoly distributor[7][8][9]. A fire destroyed most of Empire’s inventory on December 5th 1921; however they reopened less than 2 weeks later with largely new stock having been ordered by local authorities out of embarrassment over their previous situation.[10] From 1934-1945,[11][12], Empire operated as an insurance agency but closed down due to economic difficulties following the repeal of prohibition across much of America.[13][14] A small millinery business located off Nassau Boulevard suffering from poor management failed around 1930,[15][16] leading to plans for a larger mill along this location becoming moot after profits tapered off around 1935-36 despite increased investment from early supporters including millionaire Albert Einstein whose house sat atop one endowment fund within sight of the mill site).[17][18][/quote]]
The town of Ossining, New York was first settled in 1780. The name Ossining comes from the Algonquian word meaning "place where good corn is grown." The town was founded by a group of English colonists and their Native American guides, the Mohawk. The colonists were led by Major John Forbes, who arrived in 1780. He named the town after his home county of Perthshire, Scotland. The first store in Ossining opened in 1784. Ossining became an important center for trade during the Revolutionary War. In 1794, General George Washington's army camped at Ossining Heights while they attacked Fort Ticonderoga. Because of this location, Ossining played an important role in the war effort and received many supplies and reinforcements from nearby towns including Kingston and Buffalo. After the war ended, Ossining experienced rapid growth as a result of its lucrative natural resources. After years of economic development, Ossining reached its peak around 1800 with over 100 businesses operating in downtown alone. However, during the 19th century various factors such as population growth and technological advances caused Osgoode to decline gradually until it disappeared completely by 1920s due to heavy industry encroachment and loss of jobs in surrounding communities
