In 1865, Ossining voters approved a charter for the new borough of Oneonta which included most of present-day Ossining as well as parts of Watervliet and compatible villages including East Aurora and Northport. When Oneonta dissolved as an independent township in 1901 it annexed most of what are now Yonkers and Ithaca before becoming an unincorporated community again in 1912. During World War II the military used many different sites within Ossining including Amityville High School where General George Patton delivered his " ultimatum" speech on July 2nd 1944 to German troops; White Sands Missile Range; Polytechnic Institute; Fordham University's Medical School; Community College annexe #1 (now City Colleges Of New York City) ; Community College annexe #2 (now Hunterdon Hills Community College) ; Post Office building No 1 (1892-1924); Administration Building No 2 (1920-1924), all located within one mile radius of each other on South Market Street between Main Street and Rector Avenue east of Interstate 87; Allocation Building No 2 (1945-1946). This list does not include smaller or defunct institutions such as Oneonta Collegiate Institute which served students until 1979 or Local Technical Schools which opened up after World War II but closed soon afterwards because there were no schools available nearby that could replace them! Today much off grid living takes place within these boundaries thanks to open space Preserve Districts created by Mayor Timothy Loughlin back in 2006 & 2009!
