Ossining is located about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Manhattan and 25 miles (41 km) west of Buffalo. The town is named after the Ossining Mountains which lie to the north of it. The first settlers in Ossining were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. A post office called Ossining was established in 1795, and remained in operation until 1865. In 1814, General George Washington visited the area and ordered the erection of a military road between Utica, New York and Poughkeepsie, New York so that supplies could be brought upriver easily. This road became known as "The George Washington Road". In 1836, John Dickey built a gristmill on the east side of Main Street which remain active today. In 1872, James Fenton erected an opera house on High Falls Drive near Village Hall Square; this building still stands today and is used for community events such as weddings and fund-raisers. On November 5th 1913, local voters passed a resolution legalizing liquor sales within the town limits by ballot measure with 78% support from those voting. After years of prohibition efforts by local Democrats and some Republicans unsuccessfully trying to overturn the vote via administrative law or lawsuits - finally achieving legal status on October 21st 1920 through another referendum - alcohol began flowing freely into Ossining under state leadership while locals continue to assist authorities with enforcing Prohibition laws at all hours day or night with little response from elected officials other than increasing revenue generated by liquor sales themselves

Ossining, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,856 at the 2010 census. Ossining is located between Buffalo and Rochester and along the Canada-US border. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Ossining was Gideon Clemens who arrived in 1788. He had been with Captain John Webb's expedition from Boston to Niagara Falls in 1784. Mr. Clemens built a cabin on an island near present day Canandaigua Lake while he awaited his ship which never came as planned due to bad weather at that time of year across the Great Lakes region. In 1802, Ebenezer Hazard moved to Ossining from Auburn and began operating a sawmill on the north side of Canandaigua Lake which became known as Hazard's Mills after him and his son Ebenezer Jr., also a sawyer." In 1807, Alexander McKay purchased land east of present day CanandaiguaLake from Mr. Hazard for $500 cash plus tenements thereon." In 1820, George Washington Goodyear established a gristmill on White Creek just west of CanandaiguaLake where it still stands today converted into apartments - Goodyear's Mill #2). In 1840, Major General Montgomery Blair bought good farmland east of present day CanandaiguaLake for $4,000 cash plus buildings thereon" for use as military encampment during the siege of Fort Erie (1814-1815). Today’s barracks are located adjacent to this area." On February 5th 1861 Colonel Augustus Wooster organized 4 companies called "1st Regiment; 2nd Regiment; 3rd Regiment; 14th Regiment Infantry" and took command at Oswego Barracks along with 5 other companies raised locally by men loyal to General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War achieving fame through their participation including: Colored Troops (3rd & 4th Regiments) US Army Volunteer Infantry Company A US Navy Volunteer Shipyard Battalion
