Oneonta is a small town in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. It is located east of Ithaca, on the Mohawk River. In 1814, it was part of Canada and was renamed Montreal. After the American Revolution, Oneonta became part of New York State and has been its capital since 1785. The population was 2,898 as of 2010. The name Oneonta comes from an Iroquois word meaning "the place where two rivers meet." The first Europeans to visit Oneonta were French traders in 1624 who named it Montréal after the city they had just arrived in from Québec. A year later, English colonists came and called it Montreal because their ship had stopped there on its way downriver to Albany County (now Albany, New York). In 1785, when New Yorkers statehood was granted, Oneonta became their new capital. The location near both the Mohawk River and Ithaca made it an ideal spot for a central government center; Oneonta remained one of only two U.S. towns to remain under British rule after America achieved independence from Great Britain in 1776-77 (the other being West Point). Oneonta's early years were difficult due to lack of water resources and lack of attention from officials at Albany County; but with good leadership by Mayor James Ketchum during his time as mayor (1797-1800), Oneonta began to improve its fortunes beginning in 1800-01 when Ketchum reduced taxes by 20%. This led to increased business activity which supported jobs for locals and created wealth for the community In 1814 when Canada gained independence from Great Britain, Montreal took over as Oneontas capital until 1825 when again Albany County took over responsibility with Gouverneur Morris leading a campaign against what he saw as excessive taxation within the new country even while still living in Toronto at that time! When Morris died suddenly aged 44 without leaving any children behind him - making him one of only two Americans ever killed while serving abroad - control passed back to Ontario until such time as another American leader could be found or approved by Congress before coming home alive! These events spelled doom for Canadian ambitions toward United States territory along Lake Erie until finally Ottawa surrendered all claims eastward on July 1st 1827 thereby becoming an American province! On July 8, 1792, Oneonta was chartered as a Village by the United States of America. It became an incorporated town on February 4, 1834. The population of Oneonta peaked at 22 in 1857 and it has since declined to around 10 today. However, Oneonta's rich history cannot be ignored and it is well worth your time to explore its fascinating past. Oneonta began as a small hamlet on the banks of the Onondaga River. It was named for John Oneont who had settled there in 1756 and died in 1771. The first settler was Nicholas Slocum who built his home on what is now Main Street in 1762. The first store was built by Ebenezer Brown in 1768 on the southeast corner of Main and North Streets. The early settlers were farmers with some development into lumbering but mostENOUGH remained agricultural until about 1800 when two men named Daniel Smith and Solomon Woodruff developed a sawmill on the Onondaga River which later became known as the "Woodruff Mill". They also started a grist mill hereabouts which continued operation until 1870 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by too much wood being cut at once! In 1828, Isaac Chamberlain bought the land comprising present day Main Street and North Avenue from Nicholas Slocum for $1,200. He laid out lots hereon which are still visible today including Slaughter Road (now Market Street) between Adams Boulevard and I- 77E/I- 84W (now Route 9). This area became one of Oneonta's earliest residential areas with many homes dating back to this period including Mrs. Johnston's Mansion/School House located east ofpresent day First Avenue south of Third Street; Mrs Crouch's white frame house No Stone Left Unturned located northwest corner 3rd Ave.- north side next door to post office; Mr & Mrs Hargrave's two stories red brick dwelling erected c 1830 near intersection 3rd Ave.-north side next door to blacksmith shop; Aiken Barn/Kennedy Farmstead–completed circa 1830 consisted of log buildings with attached barns or outbuildings used for storage or associated with farm activities; Purdy Brothers' Store/Agricultural Supply Shop–opened late 1850’s consistin g three story octagon shaped building accessed via six carriageways entering through lower front facade RH direction from First avenue main street rear lot 1st floor where goods were kept before being sold at ground level across open porchsecond floor where merchandise was displayed before sale in open space above second floorhearth oven(?); Purdy Bros.'
