Oneonta, New York is home to the world's first and only shooting range that offers hearing protection. The range, which opened in 1905, was initially built for rifle practice by local farmers. It has been used by both professional shooters and amateurs ever since. In recent years, the range has become known for its shotgun range, which offers customers a variety of courses to shoot. In 1886, an American immigrant named George Wickersham founded the Oneonta Rifle Club in Oneonta. This club later became the Oneonta Shotgun Society and offered memberships that allowed them to use therange. From 1916 to 1922, John Purdy was President of the shotgun society and oversaw construction of what is now called "The Gables" building on Park Street in Oneonta (now part of State University of New York at Oswego). This building served as the clubhouse for both the rifle society and shotguns society until it was destroyed by fire in 1922. In 1935, two brothers named Harry and Orville Hutton purchased land adjacent to The Gables from John Purdy. They began construction on what is now known as The Range Complex (later renamed The Range), which included a training room, gun store/range house, five pistols galleries (one with a 100-meter pool), four classrooms/courses (including one designed specifically for shotgun instruction), three ranges: one 9mm with 20 rounds per magazine; one 12 Gauge with 30 rounds per magazine; and one 10mm with 10 rounds per mag. Nine years later in 1951, Harry Hutton passed away but his sons Orville Jr., Harry Jr.'s wife Esther decided to keep running the business under their name until 1978 when they changed it back to Harry Hutton Shooting & Hunting Company Incorporated after buying out their father's estate. In 1984 they added target shooting capabilities so that customers could shoot birds without having to go outside! Oneonta is a small town in New York State. It is located on the east side of the Finger Lakes, about 20 miles north of Syracuse. The population was 7,026 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Syracuse-New Rochelle, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village had been established by Dutch colonists in 1634 and incorporated as a town in 1785. In 1815, Oneonta became part of what was then called Utica County; it was renamed Oneonta after General John Armstrong's expedition to Assiniboia in 1824. In 1830, Oneonta became an independent city and remained so until 1959 when it became a suburb of Syracuse. Oneonta has a rich history dating back to its earliest days as a tiny trading post on the site where today's Interstate 893 crosses just south of its downtown core. The area that would become Oneonta owes its early growth to two main factors: access to water for irrigation and access to trails that led into upstate New York for hunting and fishing opportunities. When Erie Canal traffic began increasing around 1800, traders started moving into this area from Buffalo and Niagara Falls; one such trader, Peter Kieft, founded what is now known as Kieft Park on land that he donated to the village in 1792. By 1814, when Oneonta incorporation papers were filed with the New York State government, most residents were farmers who grew corn, beans and other vegetables for local markets or exported them abroad. The early years of development were difficult; malaria caused many deaths among settlers during this time period and roads were not built until after 1840 because funding was tight for canal construction at this point in history! Despite these challenges though, by 1850s progress had begun to make noticeable waves - First National Bank opened doors in 1865 followed by Rensselaer County Library & Recorder office in 1870! Oneonta is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is the largest city in Monroe County. The namesake of Oneonta is George Onondaga, who donated land to the town in 1798. The first settler in Oneonta was John Smith, who arrived on November 5, 1798. He and his family were among the first to settle near present day Main Street and First Avenue in Oneonta Township. Smith used this spot as a farmstead until 1814 when he sold it to Nicholas Goodrich for $200 cash. Goodrich named the property "Onondaga" after his Indian enemy, General Philip Schuyler's forces had destroyed his village at Onondaga Hill two years earlier while searching for him during their march against Indians in what became known as the Northwest Indian War (1779-1783). Goodrich took up arms against the British Crown and defeated them at Battle of Monmouth on October 14, 1788. After that victory he renamed his new home "Oneonta". In 1822 Goodrich conveyed title to Daniel Webster to become one of America's most influential citizens - later Ulysses S. Grant - through an act of Congress under which Webster was given deeds from various properties including "Onondaga". In 1847 Unitarian minister Amos Kendall founded Sunday School classes at Oneonta Seminary with eleven students; these grew into a large congregation by 1860 when Kendall left for Rochester after several years as pastor there due to health concerns about living near wealthy people then active in politics and infrastructure development around Buffalo Harbor (now Niagara Falls). Kendall returned to start school anew at Onondaga but died less than three months later before reaching school age himself; thus Sunday School continued uninterrupted until1896 when Reverend James Waddell also started teaching Bible classes starting from his private home next door/in front of one of Mrs Simons' stores just east of Main Street whereon now stands the old post office building housing City Hall since 1916 according to local historian Bertram Hoselleau: “It [the church] still stands today despite having been bombed by Japanese bombers during World War II” . The community began to grow rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1830. In 1832, Oneonta became a village and had its own school, court house, library, and post office. In 1836, Oneonta became a city with its own government and mayor. In 1840, Oneonta residents voted to annex part of neighboring Seneca Falls because they were unhappy with their hometown's lack of schools and business opportunities. The annexation led to increased growth for Oneonta as businesses opened up in both villages. Oneonta experienced some major upsets during the early 20th century including World War I and World War II. However, through hard work and determination, the community bounced back quickly after each event took place. Today, Oneonta is one of the most thriving communities in Western New York!
