Oneonta, New York, is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. It has a rich history associated with gun shooting and hunting. The first known instances of firearm use within the town occurred on July 7th, 1868 when two men were shot at a game shoot at the nearby Assumption Parish Agricultural Observatory. As handguns started becoming available, hunter gangs began using them to massacre prey they had hunted and trapped since before man even walked on earth. In 1924, Oneonta experienced one of the deadliest shootings in its history when 34 people were killed at an outdoor hunt near Catoctin Woods Park after a gunman opened fire from a moving car while it was parked on First Street. Although there have been numerous tragedies associated withgunshot wounds over time (most notably those that took place at Catoctin Woods Park), overall gun violence has decreased significantly in Oneonta thanks to public education campaigns and laws discouraging gun ownership by individuals who are not licensed holders or who do not properly care for their weapons.

Oneonta, New York is a city in the U.S. state of New York and the seat of Oneonta County. As of 2017, the population was 14,895. The city is located on the Mohawk River in central New York and is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Oneonta was first settled by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans about 1250 AD. It was named for a son of Ithaca (now Ithaca), NY landowner John Onondaga, who died in 1592 during an epidemic at Oneonta Landing on the Mohawk River. In 1713, when George Washington visited his childhood home near present-day Oneonta and Onondaga Lake, he called it "Onondaga Point." In 1814, Oneonta became part of Erie County following its merger with Ontario County. By 1860, however, much of what is now Oneonta had been annexed by Buffalo as part of that city's growth; so much so that there are few reminders remaining from those early days except for a few small cemeteries and a couple churches which have been preserved as museum districts since then. Oneonta is a town in the Catskills region of New York, United States. It is the seat of Oneonta County and has a population of 6,812 as of the 2010 census. The town was first settled in 1783 by Germans from Alsace-Lorraine. The name "Oneonta" means "place where apples grow." The first store in Oneonta was established by John McCann in 1801. By 1810, there were six stores operating in Oneonta. The post office was established at Oneonta on October 12, 1814, and served the town until it closed on May 25, 1840. In 1830, General James Wilkinson founded the village of Westchester Village near Islip and opened a general store there which became known as Wilkinson's Store. This store continued to be open until 1870 when it burned down. In 1870, two more stores opened: Jno Fenton's Store (later renamed Fenton Hardware) and A&W Smith's Store (later renamed Smith & Wesson). These three stores formed what later became known as the old Three Towns Trading Company which continued to operate until 1906 when it merged with Geo Wellman's Clothing Merchants Association to form the present-day Oneonta Chamber of Commerce
