They had heard about an area of Upstate New York that was being left largely untouched by cultivation because of its location: The Catskills were located just east of Oneonta on the bank of the Hudson River. The two men founded a small town called Newtown on land they bought from the Native Americans. Newtown quickly grew into a busy commercial center. It became known for its fine wines, olive oil, cheese, flour mills, and other goods that were exported all over Europe. And it also became home to some of the most important people in local politics and business circles - including both Isaac Cook and Nicholas Brown himself. The days when Oneonta was an important center of trade and culture are long gone; but it's still remembered fondly by those who lived there during those times - including today's residents who love their town dearly!

The Erie Canal connected Buffalo and Syracuse through Oneonta in 1825 and this caused a shift in economic growth for Oneonta until World War II when aluminum became an important industry hereabouts due to air raids on nearby towns such as Buffalo that destroyed many homes with incendiary bombs during that conflict; however aluminum production declined after 1945 due largely to cheaper imported materials from other countries than America had been able to provide/produce domestically - which also impacted local economy adversely thereafter notwithstanding some recent resurgence (albeit limited) spending on Alaskan goldmining which has returned jobs hereabouts since then but still does not completely fill all employment gaps created thereby by deindustrialization elsewhere attendant therewith.) Today only a few businesses remain open including one restaurant, two churches and one post office - none of which are used for retail purposes now although they once were. A single large family farmstead remains standing while most other buildings have been replaced or converted into housing over time including three schools, two churches and a high school now closedtered as well as several dozen residences dating back before 1900s when business values hereabouts began falling off again following increased competition from surrounding communities). The first permanent settler in Oneonta was Nicholas Denton in 1792. The town was named for John Onondaga and his wife Hannah Oneonta (1745-1815), daughter of Sir John Onondaga and his second wife Susannah Yates. In 1807, Oneonta became a town on the disbanded Western Reserve Bank due to its location near Rome, New York City. In 1862 Oneonta successfully petitioned to become a city under the newly created state of New York. Although it did not achieve full city status until 1904, it had been an important commercial center throughout its history and retains that reputation today as one of the most vibrant small towns in upstate New York. A major industry early on was agriculture with crops such as corn, wheat and rye being grown; however this has largely disappeared over time as various other sectors have taken over including heavy manufacturing but also some light businesses such as retail shops and restaurants which continue to thrive today despite continuing economic recession conditions across much of Upstate New York
