In 1828, Oneonta was founded as an agricultural village by Loyalist refugees from the American Revolution. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its natural resources and population growth. By 1891, Oneonta had a population of over 2,000 people and was one of the most prosperous small towns in New York. In 1929, Oneonta became part of the city of Syracuse.

The first settler in Oneonta was Nicholas Wohlgemuth in 1763. He bought land from the Abenaki people and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1801, General David Hunter burned down Wohlgemuth's cabin to clear land for a new fortification purpose. The town name comes from an Indian word meaning "place where two rivers meet." The first post office was established in 1807 and named after Nicholas Wohlgemuth's brother-in-law, George Stephenson. In 1827, Three Rivers Township was organized and Oneonta became its seat. In 1888, Oneonta became a part of Onondaga County when it was created from parts of Erie and Ontario Counties. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, there were 1,521 people residing in Oneonta total including 703 households and 531 families residing within the township's limits; however claimed village boundaries made up 404 personages which include: 345 residents who lived within one mile (1 km) of either Onondaga Lake or Seneca Creek; 377 residents who lived within one mile (1 km) of each other but did not share an address; 246 residents who lived within one half mile (800 m) of any public high school; 186 residents who lived within one half mile (800 m) of any private high school or college; as well as 251 students attending local community colleges or universities inside Onondaga County proper). Assembling these figures excludes 282 nonresidential buildings used by businesses that fall outside township boundaries such as libraries or schools but are counted as part of their municipality’s governing body because they are considered single use structures without permanent occupants while employed by those entities outside their municipality

Oneonta is a town in New York, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneonta-on-Hudson Valley, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Oneonta were Dutch colonists who came in 1624 and 1627. They named it "New Utrecht". In 1755, the town was purchased by Nicholas Noyes from the Indians for £5 per annum. He organized a school and tavern and built a gristmill which he operated until his death in 1760. His son John bought out Noyes' interest in 1764 and continued to operate it until 1814 when it passed into private hands again. On July 4, 1807, Oneonta became a village under the jurisdiction of Troy on Long Island after splitting off from Troy Township (now West Hempstead). On January 3, 1828, Oneonta incorporated as an independent town with a population of 2144 people according to the US Census Bureau's first national census report. The original settlers had arrived during what is now considered its early history; one account has it that “the first white man who set foot upon this spot” was Captain James Cook who landed on Halloween night in 1779 while exploring around Male Bayou east of present-day Oneonta for possible landing sites for HMS Endeavour during his circumnavigation of America Expedition - thus beginning American settlement hereabouts." In 1830–31 local farmers formed a cooperative society known as Society of Agriculturalists with interests including raising livestock and selling products such as eggs and butter; they also raised funds to build roads and other infrastructure necessary for subsistence farming life on Long Island at that time."
