Oneonta, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is located on the Chenango River. The first settler in Oneonta was John Atwater who arrived in 1785. In 1802, James Fenton bought land from Atwater and built the first store on what is now Main Street. A post office called Oneonta was established in 1820 and remained in operation until it was discontinued by the U.S. Postal Service in 1945. In 1830, Andrew Stephenson purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land including present-day Main Street from Fenton for $5 per acre ($). He named his property "Oneonta". The town began to form as early as 1836 when two men named Fuller developed a plan to build a log cabin and mill on this property which became known as Fuller's Mills. The first school session taking place in Oneonta took place on October 5, 1837 under the name of "Hills School". By 1840, there were six stores and twenty-one people living in Oneonta according to the US Census data; all but one of these businesses were operated by Native Americans or their descendants throughout most of its history. Norman Hapgood settled at Whatcom Creek about five miles (8 km) east of Oneonta around 1825 after purchasing 100 acres (40 ha) near modern day White Plains Junction where he founded what would become Mohawk Village within minutes of arriving with his wagon train on July 4, 1825.* Hapgood had been born into an Iroquois family that had resided near Niagara Falls since at least 1692.* He attempted to purchase land northwest of Buffalo but he ran into difficulties acquiring enough financing so he instead started developing what would become Mohawk Village along Whatcom Creek southeast of today's Webster Avenue just south of Interstate 787/State Route 169 junction.* Eventually Hapgood became president and general manager for Erie Railroad Company following its organization in 1861†† This led him to start leasing real estate from other railroad companies starting with Buffalo & Schenectady Railroad Company‡§§ which developed Onondaga Lake into what is now downtown Syracuse* After purchasing 400 acres (160 ha) north of Buffalo from Samuel Geddes††*, Hapgood renamed his new village “Oneontasburgh” after himself* As word spread about hisVillage development (* see footnote below), more settlers came* In 1870–71*, local plumbers Elijah Hubbard and Israel Drake opened Hubbard's Plumbing & Steamfitters shop #1 at 303 Elmira Road which remains open today as one of only three remaining plumbing shops left standing across America specializing exclusivelyin steamfitting * Known also as “Hubbard”s because they acquired their business from Elijah Hubbard son Isaac who inherited it from father * Store #2 opened soon afterwards @ 302 Elmira Road also continuing operations today essentially unchanged since then * Property purchases continued apace with total area now consisting Of: 501 Elmira Rd; 502 Elmira Rd; 503 Elmira Rd; 504 Cedar Ave NW facing I-787/SR 169 juncture; 505 Elmira Rd + 6 Lots formerly owned by Cheney Lumber Co.; 506 Cedar Ave NW facing I-787/SR 169 junction *"Hubbard's" current location has changed multiple times over time due to various transactions involving adjacent properties owner(s)"

Oneonta is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,295 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Rochester Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Oneonta were George and Elizabeth McKitrick who arrived in 1786 from Virginia. They built a log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Oneonta. The McKitricks were followed by other families including the Hickey family and John Broughton who arrived in 1827. The most important event that took place in Oneonta during this time was when General Israel Putnam fought a battle against Native Americans at White's Ford on October 12, 1828 which decided the course of history for New York[1]. This event marked the beginning of Indian removal from what is now upstate New York[2]. In 1841 Methodist Reverend Elijah Hicks moved to Oneonta from Niagara Falls and purchased land north of town on which he built a church and school[3]. Reverend Hicks also began building an Agricultural School which became known as "The Normal School" today. In 1865 Rev. Hicks donated his land to become State High School #1 (now Monroe Community College) where he served as its first president[4]. In 1912 Rev. Wm Fenton Beecher settled in Oneonta with his wife after moving from Hartford, Connecticut[5][6]. He founded Beacon Hill Baptist Church there and it remains one of Oenoata's largest congregations today with over 1,600 members strong[7], making it one of America's oldest religious organizations[]! Thanks to Reverend Beecher and others like him, Two Roads Bridge Road became established as a main road through town soon after being opened to traffic in 1911 between Maplewood on the east side and Northwestern Heights on the west side. It has been reported that many notable people including Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and Julius Caesar ever passed through Two Roads Bridge Road while traveling to or from various events or meetings throughout their lives[]! Throughout its long history Two Roads Bridge Road has always been an important artery for traffic through Oneonta...and we can only imagine how great things would have been if it never broke down!
