Oneonta, New York is home to one of the earliest optical accessory stores in the United States. The store was opened in 1872 by Dr. John Smeaton and his wife, Mrs. Jane Smeaton. It was originally located on Main Street and later moved to its current location on Park Avenue. In 1903, Oneonta became the first town in upstate New York to approve a municipal light system. At this time, Oneonta residents were required to purchase light bulbs from local merchants and use them to light their homes and businesses. The Oneonta Municipal Light System eventually became the largest municipally operated light system in New York State with a total installed capacity of over $1 million by 1928. In 1935, Dr. Jens Jensen founded Jensen's Optical Instrument Company which would become one of the most successful optical accessory companies in America until it folded in 1998. Smith and his brother-in-law Amos materially improved the methods of making telescopes and other optical instruments. They founded the firm of Smith & Son Observatory Company, which remains aktives today. In 1902, Augustus Folsom started production of celluloid photographic film at his studios on Main Street in Oneonta. The company became one of the first in America to mass produce motion pictures from east to west with synchronized sound.

In 1881, a British inventor named John Lobb developed a camera obscura that allowed photographers to take pictures with an image on a screen behind the lens (Figure 4). Before this invention, all photos taken with cameras had to be developed in darkrooms using chemicals and physical procedures. These darkroom processes required skilled workers who were expensive to maintain and operated at very high temperatures (Figure 5). With the development of photography, manufacturers started producing more affordable equipment such as viewfinders and eyepieces for their cameras. In 1904, American photographer George Eastman began Manufacturing his own camera lenses using two elements in each lens instead of one (Figure 6), which allowed him to create much cheaper cameras without having to depend on other manufacturers' products. Early film developers also began using Leica Tessar lenses beginning in 1916 because they offered greatly improved optics over smaller aperture lenses produced before then. After World War II ended in 1945, technological advances led to the development of digital photography which eliminated many of the issues associated with earlier printing methods such as line noise and jagged edges caused by variations in paper size
In 1877, a scientist named S.I. Maiman developed an improved version of the binoculars he had made earlier that year. Called the "Maiman Binoculars", these new glasses were designed to be more sensitive to light than ever before, allowing users to see in much sharper detail than they could with ordinary eyeglasses. Demand for these new glasses was so high that Maiman had to ration them and only sell enough to satisfy a small number of customers at a time. Oneonta is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. Oneonta was founded in 1788 by settlers from Poughkeepsie. It became a city in 1854 and was renamed Oneonta on December 12, 1892. The first settler to come to what is now Oneonta, John Ramsay of Greenfield, Connecticut arrived on horseback on November 16, 1788. A party of thirteen men and one woman followed him three days later and landed at the mouth of the Genesee River on the west side of present day Onondaga Lake. They cached their goods for several weeks until they could find tule deer meat to cook with. They then built their first cabin which they named "Gramma's Cabin" after Mrs. Ramsay's mother-in-law who had died ten days earlier while helping them load their baggage onto a ship for England. In January 1789 another group of thirteen settlers also set out from Greenfield but this time they were met by a group of twenty Indians led by Chief McIntosh who said he would drive them out if they did not leave his land immediately so eleven men including two young boys set off into the woods while four others stayed behind to trade with the Indians which helped build up some trust between the two groups that would continue through many years Onondaga county was formed from part of Ulster county on March 14th, 1795 following the Treaty of Kingston when Great Britain ceded all but about 15 square miles (39 km²) in western New York east of Cayuga Lake to France under President George Washington . In 1800 French traders founded Fort Niagara near Onondaga City after discovering rich coal seams downriver . The fort served as an Indian trading post until it closed in 1814 when Ulysses S Grant relieved General Philip Sheridan commander at Fort Erie as part of Army operations against Native American warfare throughout much of central New York during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief The town boundaries changed several times over its history; most notably when Onondaga County was divided into three parts along Hamilton Street (now called Elmira Boulevard) following an administrative reorganization within Chenango County on February 22nd 1889 amid efforts by Governor Hiram Johnson to reduce rural residents’ influence in government remarkably similar changes had occurred just six months earlier with only minor adjustments to street names throughout downtown Oneonta – likely due moreso to improvisation than anything else . By 1830 however Oneonta had effectively become self contained again with streets running straight south from Main Street toward Buffalo creek where passenger ferries took passengers across Buffalo Bayou From 1830 until 1860 most manufacturing activity took place outside Ofoneta primarily within nearby Canandaigua where tanning leather production began early and continued until around 1920s; lead smelting stopped around 1840 although there are references dating back to before that time to various operations taking place at Leadville Mill near modern White Sands Beach NY orginal lead mine workings are still visible today crater 5 mi WSW Ofonega
