The first settler in Oneonta was John Pritchard who arrived in 1739. He built a log cabin on his farmstead which he named after one of his two children, Isaac Pritchard. In 1768, Alexander Hamilton purchased land from Pritchard and began construction on what would become Hamilton Manor. The manor house became home to Hamilton's family for over 100 years until it was destroyed by fire in 1892. In 1800, Oneskaia (Helen) Skene married John Morse and moved to Oneonta with him. They started a grocery store that continued until 1906 when it burned down due to an electrical storm. In 1825, Nicholas Gedney bought land from Andrew Mellon and began developing it into one of the most prosperous small businesses in Western New York; Gedney Paper Company still exists today as Oneonta Paper Company Inc.. In 1828-29Located just northwest of modern day Oneonta along Route 7 - now Main Street - an important treaty council meeting between Iroquois nations took place at Onondaga Lake under watchful eyes of American forces encampment located nearby on Long Island Sound near present day Webster Hall (now State University at Buffalo). This event helped pave way for Cæsar Chaltin's famous song "The Maple Leaf" being written about Canada West during this time period while also promotingwestern NY as an area ripe for immigration given its strategic location midway between Albany & Montreal making it both economically viable as well as culturally diverse: abilities that have yet continue through today's economy & culture
Oneonta was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Oneonta and his wife, Rebecca. It was the first town in what is now Yates County, New York. In 1814, Oneonta became the seat of government for the new county of Yates. The population of Oneonta increased rapidly during the late 19th century, with cotton mills and other businesses being established here. The population peaked in 1920 at around 990 people, but declined following World War II until it reached its current level in 1990.
