Oneonta, New York is a small town located in Tioga County, New York. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. Oneonta is part of the Utica–Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Oneonta" comes from the Mohawk word Ontonawa which means "place of many streams." The first settlers in Oneonta were Dutch and they arrived in 1725. They named the village after General John Graves Simcoe who founded Kingston on the Ontario River in 1792. The first post office was established in 1814 and mail service began operations on September 25, 1819. The town was chartered as a Village on November 5, 1821 by Henry Wetherbee and others instrumental in its establishment. It became an incorporated town on December 8th of that year under the leadership of Samuel Hoadley and George Snively. On January 2nd, 1860, Oneonta had a population of 798 people ranking it fourth largest village in Tioga County behind Ithaca (1,917), Auburn (1,953) and Lawrence (1,824). In 1870 there were 1,611 residents living within one mile of Oneonta proper with an acreage rate of $2 per acre! It wasn't until 1912 when electrification started to be made available to villages like Oneonta that electricity rates started to rise which led to more development taking place within the community such as businesses opened up for services such as plumbing and heating etcetera raising property values even further resulting in more jobs being created leading to even more economic growth over time! In 1916-1917 during World War I one company outproduced all others within Tioga County when producing munitions for America's war effort! This led to increased business activity including retail stores becoming popular especially due to increased demand for goods exported abroad! On October 20th 1917 Three Mile Dam burst causing extensive flooding across much ruralTioga County leaving much damage including structures destroyed or damaged beyond replacement costing millions of dollars including $10 million USD paid by American taxpayers!!!!! This event known as 'the Great Flood' forever changed life along Ulster Creek where damage totaled $26 million making it one of the most devastating natural disasters ever!!! prior to this not only did farmers have produce but also their homes were their primary income stream!!! Significantly this also impacted industry such as textiles production moving away from rural areas!! Additionally some 6100 jobs were lost due directly or indirectly to this disaster!!!! Priorities shifted from rescuing victims/individuals displaced affected individuals rather than repairing infrastructure INSTEAD OF HELPING THE PUBLIC AND SUPPORTING BUSINESSES LOST INDUSTRY WAS CAUSED BY A NATURAL DISASTER
